Muffler explosion

I just wanted to throw this out there. A friend, at our marina, just got a, new to him, boat with a genset. Never having used a generator before, he attempted to start the generator "under load", the generator stalled, he attempted an immediate restart, and boom, the muffler blew up. Apparently unburned fuel was in the system, and when he tried a restart things went bad. Fortunately no real damage other than the Muffler and some water in the bilge. He learned a valuable lesson, that day, never start your generator under load, wait until the unit is up to speed and running smoothly before closing the breaker.

Thats odd.. probably not a good idea to put a load on a just started engine but it should cause a failure like this.. ive started many genys with an entire house wired to them..

Still would be best to not start under load

Current is inversely proportional to voltage. In other words low voltage high current. As a generator comes up to speed the voltage is lower, as may be the cycles,(needs to 60hz in the US), this increases the current which could damage, or in this case stall the generator. Obviously the higher the demand on the generator the more likely it is that there could be damage.
So yes, best to start a generator unloaded, let it get up to speed, then switch over your load.
