Genset 7.3ECD Overheating - Generator known issue with cold raw water?

Was told by my marina that there is a known issue with generator overheating when the seawater is at colder temperatures due to the thermostat. They said the work around is to remove the thermostat until the water warms. Anyone ever heard of this?

I have not, but then again the coolest I've run mine in is 50 or so degree water....

I guess it kind of makes sense...maybe. I am sure others will jump in !

That doesn't make any since at all. The Gen is closed cooling and uses a heat exchanger. Removing the thermostat would cause the motor to run colder, so the only thing that could be going on is the exchanger is building up ice on the raw water side. Being in Long Island tells me your in salt water, and salt water needs to be much below 32 degrees to freeze. Only places I know that get the cold is the polar caps.

So if your over heating then I would check your strainer, intake pickup, impeller, heat exchanger and Gen zincs. If all that checks out, I would then look at the Gen circulating water pump

Not sure of the age of your boat but Kohler issued a "Service Bulletin" pertaining to the configuration of the Catalytic Converter where-by when used in Salt Water the orifice(s) at the flange of the Catalytic Converter where it bolts to the Generator were too small (and not enough of them) causing salt to plug the holes leading to overheat problems.

If I'm not mistaken, this topic was discussed on this Web-site. The "Service Bulletin" listed the Serial Numbers of the effected GenSet's.....

Can anyone point me to this thread mentioned above. It's an 05 31pc if that helps in identifying the issue

Also note it is for Marine Generator set models 5ECD/4EFCD and 7.3ECD/s6EFCD built before Serial #2113080
