air pump??

06 496 with the air pump thing, does pulling all the blue drain plugs serve the same purpose as pressurizing the system with the little air pump thingy?
 
The air pump opens 2 low drains. This is for draining the raw water side of the cooling system. If you pull some of the other blue plugs you will most likely find some that will drain the closed side (engine block) that contains antifreeze. The pump is raw water side only.
 
yes, i'm only referring to the raw water side. so if you use the pump (which didn't really seem to build much pressure) is that all you have to do for the raw water side? i pulled the blue plugs, two at the bottom front of the port side and one at the bottom front of the starboard side. my question is does pulling the blue plugs serve the same purpose as using the air pump or should the air pump be used in conjunction with pulling the blue plugs. also wondering if i can just plug up a 12 volt tire pump and hook it to the air valve on the engine, will that work just like the hand pump? does this pretty much take care of the raw water side on the engine? i couldn't find any more blue drain plugs on the manifolds but i think they are on the closed side of the cooling loop anyway so they shouldn't have to be drained. i thought i read something about a green thing that pops up to let you know you are good, where is that located?
 
So I would tell you to run AF through the RAW WATER side and leave it in over the winter...

I ONLY use the BLUE PUMP if I am afraid of a short term freeze and I have not winterized.

HOWEVERY, in theory all you have to do is use the Pump Out Feature and you are winterized on the RAW WATER SIDE...you are but not me :)
 
well, i was asked to help a guy out and this is the situation: he has a boat on a lift on the water, he has no trailer. the water level has gone down too low to launch the boat so it is pretty much stuck on the lift until the water comes back up next spring. someone from a local dealer has come out every year and winterized it for him in this situation without any issues. he was referred to me by a friend so i went to take a look. i was only vaguely familiar with the system so i pulled out all of the blue plugs and drained all the raw water i could then re installed the plugs. i also disconnected the intake hose and poured A/F back thru the out drive until we could see it run out (it didn't take much). THEN i tried to pressurize the system with that little pump but it didn't seem to work very well. i also completely removed the hose at the back of the oil cooler, no water was present there. it is a cuddy cabin boat with a small head, vacuflush toilet and cockpit sink so i addressed all those items too. just wondering if what i've done will be sufficient as far as draining the raw water side of the cooling system since there isn't really a feasible way to draw A/F thru the system (that i could figure out at least). he said the servicing dealer did not run the engine when they winterized it so i talked to him about fogging the engine and fuel treatment. my only concern is the raw water side of the cooling at this point. i think i got it drained good, just wondering if anyone can confirm from the info i'm posting?? i would much rather put the boat on a trailer but it just isn't an option.
 
I've got 350 mpi horizons, but it should be similar. First, the blue plugs are only on the raw water side. Need a wrench to drain the closed side.

The blue pump is not for pressurizing the system. It's for operating a set of air-operated valves that do the same thing as removing the blue plugs. It's supposed to be a quick way of draining the raw water side, but those valves can stick so i don't trust them.

The only gotcha is to turn the engine over a few times with the blue plugs out (or air valves open) to get accumulated water out of the raw w/p.
