95 Quicksilver 7.5 is having starting issues. sort of. the starter turns over as it should but the bendix doesn't kick out and engage the flywheel. so i give the starter a lite tap or maybe two and then all is fine, it starts as it should. i've taken the starter off and disassembled it. the armature had what looked like a thin coating of green corrosion so i cleaned it and reassembled. i failed to seat the brushes properly so i had to take it apart again. found out i had damaged 2 of the brushes but i was still able to reassemble it properly, just two of the brushes are damaged now. after i reinstalled it, the battery acted like it was dead but it isn't. so i jumped the generator battery to one of my house batteries and it worked fine. all that to get to my question. if i take the starter back apart and install new brushes, will this cure my problem? would the two damaged brushes cause the starter to be hard to engage, requiring extra amps to get it going?

did i test the what with a what?? ;D no, just cleaned it and reassembled. i now have the brushes in hand, they cost 7 bucks. if this doesn't cure the problem i'll just bite the bullet and get a new one coming.

update: new brushes and cleaned the armature, reassembled and all is well. haven't had a starting issue since this repair was completed.
