Chesapeake Trip 8/10 to 8/19 (Last Minute Plans)

We are in the beginning stages of planning a last minute trip from Tom's River down to AC or Cape May as a first stop. Then head to the C&D canal and have lunch at Schafers. Head into the Chesapeake and hit a few Marinas. Maybe Slip Jack in the Sasafras, maybe down to Baltimore Inner Harbour to Fells Point, then to Annapolis City Dock. Not sure exactly at this point but one thing for sure we will wind up at St. Michaels Marina. I always wanted to go there.

Joe WoJo and I are in so far. Anyone Interested?? Any suggestions on places, tips on anything. I have never been on a trip like this and I'm a little concerned, nervous and I want to have as much fun as possible and be as safe as possible.

I am located on the Magothy River. Half way between Baltimore and Annaoplis. So I can answer or help with this part of the bay. Just let me know.

Want to join us or meet up somewhere? Beverages on me. At this point its definite. Leaving Toms River Sat morn at 9ish. Any suggestions? Is the Chesapeake clearly marked? I know I'll have more questions. Thanks for offering to pay for my fuel......I meant thanks for offering to give us advice.

Thanks for offering to pay my fuel to meet up with ya, or did you say beverages!!! Heck ya we will meet up with you providing the dates work out. I will be in Denver from 8/12-8/16 on business. The bay is marked well. The easiest way to navigate the Bay is to run the shipping channel or the Craighill Channel. Both will be on your plotter. Places to go are:

Rock Hall - awesome place and on the Bay. I think you said something about St Micheals - great place. On your way to St Michaels you must stop at the Jetty dock bar which you cannot miss. (Free Docking of course) You will pass by it on your way to St Michaels. Annapolis is a fun place as well. Another great stop would be Pleasure Cove Marina, home of Chesire Crab which is south of Baltimore... Let me know when you figure out your route and where you will be along the way and I can tell you what is a fun place to go and where we could possibly meet up.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for that info , I can't wait i think we are going to have an awesome time. Hope the weather is good. Question for you, up here in Barnegat bay NJ if you are not in the channel you are in about 2 feet of water, From looking at the charts it seems like Cheasepeake is somewhat similar, is it relatively forgiving if you step out of the channel, and what about crab pots, I am told they are everywhere??
My 48 draws about 4 feet to the bottom of the props, I know you have big ships going thru the main channel but what about when you scoot off to theses marina's?? does it go down to like 4 feet immediately??

Bob, thanks so much for the advice so far. Now I,m more excited. As you know Joe and I are going together. He has great questions that of course I'm concerned about also.

The depth does not scoot down to 4ft immediately when out of the channel. I rarely stay in the channel. Now with that being said, when you go to Marinas or restaurants, you will want to follow the marks. The Bay does in FACT get REAL skinny when you get close to shore. One area in particular you going to really want to pay attention to the marks is Kent Narrows (assuming that is the route you take to St. Michaels). As far as crab pots go, they are a pain, however they are clearly marked. Also, the crab pots are never in the channels. They are really located in shallow water kind of out of way. Only time I have an issue with crab pots is when I am blowing off the marks to save time. Meaning instead of staying in 20-30ft of water, I will cut the mark and go into 8ft of water. That is where the crab pots will be. They are typically laid out in a line so its easy to read them and stay away. Of course, there are a couple of crabbers that pepper the heck out of the mouth of the Magothy so I am constantly trying to avoid them. I would suggest you guys visit Annapolis for sure. Great time...Grab a mooring and take water taxi into downtown. Or you could anchor, but I like the mooring.....I don't see to relax with my boat on the hook and me not there.

Sounds fun guys. As for Skip jack, its nice, but its a long slow ride up the river. No wake and usually lots of boat traffic.

I always like to stop at Mears Great Oaks! Jelly fish Joel's is a fun party spot with a beach at the Marina. They also have a pool. I would rather do this then Skip Jack. It's also fun on the approach into the marina ;D

I still pucker up!

You can also raft up and anchor for the night just a Ross from the marina. It's well protected.

Ahh yes jelly fish Joel's. Fun place, especuay if you like to people watch. And the approach, yes not for the faint at heart.

OK, staying at Mears Great Oak next Sat eve and heading to Baltimore Inner Harbour from there.

Bob, Monday we are leaving Baltimore for Annapolis if you want to meet up at the Jetty Dock Bar or something.

Buddy, sounds like a great trip. Wish the "Azure" was able to join you. Maybe next time! We all talked about planning a trip up the Chesapeake at some point so we'll be interested to hear where you stopped and how you enjoyed your trip. If this weather continues, it would be a plus!

Grrrrr would love to. Will be stuck in Denver. Just my luck.

I hope this weather changes. We may get away from rain but the clouds may be tough to get away from. Fingers crossed

buddy...funny that you guys decided to do this. we also decided to do a last minute trip to the annapolis area about 2 weeks ago. i ran up on the 26th and currently in Kent Narrows. had to get up there to have some work done though, and i'm still on the hard. i've been stalling on responding because i'm not sure when we're gonna get wet again. scheduled for today though, so fingers crossed.

i'm actually thinking about mears great oak this weekend. you said you're staying there 'next Sat'. does that mean the 10th? or the 17th? have to figure out if i can squeeze through the Narrows North channel though. anybody have any advice? i draw about 4' and am a little nervous about all the stories of shoaling through there.

if that doesn't work out, we may head to Herrington South, or maybe St. Michael's. there's a War of 1812 celebration/re-enactment in St. M this weekend though, so we might not be able to get in.

we're not that good at making plans, but we do plan to be in the area for the next few weeks. :D let us know if you go annapolis, or Kent Narrows (jetty dock bar) next week, as we might be able to join.

take care, and safe travels!

Twarble, We had lunch at Schafers in the C&D yesterday. We got to Inner Harbor Baltimore about 5pm yesterday. We are heading to Annapolis City dock tomorrow morning (Tuesday) Tuesday and Wed eve in Annapolis, Thursday and Friday eve in Mears Great Oak. Then blasting back to Cape May. We decided not to do St Michael. It doesn't make sense to me to tie up at night and leave the next morning. Too much running and can't really enjoy so we decided to stay two nights in less places and relax and enjoy more. Call my cell if you want to meet up somewhere. Look at the Youtube videos on Mears Great Oaks and Fairlee Creek. I even called them to discuss the same concern you have. No problem, we'll be fine.

buddy...sounds like you guys are having fun! we splashed in kent narrows on thursday. did st. mike's on friday, rock hall saturday, and great oaks on sunday! we actually thought we saw you guys at great oaks as we saw 2 40PCs coming and going. both were beautiful as always. :)

great oaks was a trip! getting in and out is ridiculously stressful. it looks like you're going to beach yourself, but you're in 6 feet of water. it seems to me after only 2 trips in and out that the closer you are to the beach, the better off you are. i only had 2.5 feet under me when next to the last 2 little green markers, but had closer to 5 feet on my way in stuck next to the beach. keep an eye out as you pass these two markers for anyone coming out of fairlee creek. i ticked off a sailor that was coming out because i didn't stop or something. don't know how i could have because there were 4 boats on my stern, and he had plenty of room to spin...so i think i was in the right. :) as you make that right hand turn after the 2nd green the water picks up speed, and it gets really narrow. seems like there's enough room for 2 boats, but i don't want to find out. also, there were plenty of HUGE boats back there. so i know it's totally doable.

for the record...kent narrows north wasn't bad at all. if you stick to the green markers in both directions you're really good regardless of tides..just in case you head that way, or anybody else was curious.

so, we're back in kent narrows. i plan to leave for annapolis on wednesday, hopefully early. i'm planning on lunch at pusser's, and probably crabs later. :) love to meet ya, so keep an eye out. i'll buy the first pain killer. :D

c ya,

Buddy, it's Anthony Cerami with the black 31pc next to you in AC. Wish would have seen your post sooner I always wanted to take that trip to the Chesapeake. So I maybe heading up to the NY harbor this weekend to go up the Hudson. What marina did you stay at in at the NJ side there? Also how long of a trip is that leg from the Barnaget inlet? Hope all is well!

Buddy let me know about Annapolis. The weather is looking rainy in ocm so I may call an audible and head to Annapolis instead. Let me know where you think the best place to dock up is. Hope your trip is going well.
