Drive oil cooler failure

So I have had a drive oil cooler failure which is sending drive oil into the water side of the cooler and out the exhaust along with water into the drive oil. The marina is discussing the issue with Formula Guard warranty.

Anybody have this happen? Boat has only lived in salt water for 15 months out of the last 5 years with layups and winter storage, seems like a premature failure to me?

Happened to me last season on my 2015 45. With mine the main hose came off when I started the boat and I heard the water rushing in. But lucky for me it was when I was doing my pre-engine checks and I was able to close the valve before it was a problem. It should just been water in the bilge but there was drive oil also. So that's when we noticed that the oil cooler failed (it had a crack in the membrane) and I had to replace it.

Happened to me late last year. 2006 37 pc. Just as you describe. Replaced over the winter and all set now. Couldn’t comment on premature or not.

Well, 2006 until 2022. That sounds reasonable. Environment, hours, and full or part time season?

I believe that if a 2017 has a failure with only 130 of salt hours and 15 months in the water, something just doesn’t add up..

Dave, you and I have the same year 45 i bought mine with 115 hours on it and it now has 165. At this time i have not had any problems (crossed fingers) Good luck on getting this resolved. I would hope that Formula or Volvo will help you out with this problem.

Ray, I remember that! I had 130 hours when I purchased and now 190 total. I moved it north into fresh water, so only about 140 hours in salt.

Cornerstone is coming today to inspect, we’ll see what happens.
