Anyone have any experiance with this unit? I did some research and this was the top one on my list. I finally did all the measurements and it will be tight but it will fit. But I have not actually talked with anyone who has used one, so that is my last step before I put my hard earned money down on one.

Send John at Tightline rods an email or give him a call. He can asnwer any questions you have. I have bought 2 complete systems from him in the last year.

What are you looking for, Chartplotter, GPS, Depth, radar?

I went with Raymarine C70 first with radar, then went with Garmin 3010C this year. Cant wait to put it in ;D

All I want is a chatrplotter/gps. I don't fish so I do not need a fishfinder, and not ready for radar yet. I am just looking for opinions on how well and easy it is to operate in a real world environment. By normal people not electronics wizards. You know what I mean?

MACJAZZY,
HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE NAVMAN LINE. I HAVE THE 5500 SERIES WITH EXTERNAL ANTENNA. IT IS A GPS, CHARTPLOTTER WITH C MAP, AND A FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IF YOU CHOOSE THE OPTIONAL SENDING UNITS. ITS 3 IN ONE, AND I LOVE IT. ONLY ONE HOLE TO CUT, EASY TO USE, AND GREAT TECH SUPPORT. BOATFIX.COM HAS THE BEST PRICES ON ELECTRONICS THAT I HAVE FOUND. GARY

I liked Furuno's reputation. Navman still seems a little too young for me. I jumped on the Micrologic bandwagon early on with their handheld. It was top pick in every magazine and had the most features. Its now a paper weight on my desk. I also like this particular model because it has the flat out biggest screen that will fit on my boat. I like the idea of not having to squint or stare at a display at speed. Thanks for the suggestion. Navman is almost worth it just for the fuel management feature. however whenever I have inquired about it I am told "I don't think it will work on your engine with fuel returns" But no one ever says anything definitive. Including Navman reps at the shows.

Furuno make some of the best units you can buy ...The GP7000 does not require a masters degree to learn and use ... a little time spent on the unit with a manual and your good to go... Let me know what type of questions you might have...

I'm 150% sure you cannot beat my prices!...
John

How does the screen do in sunlight? I asked the salesman at the washington d.c. boat show and he kind of hemmed and hawed about how no one really made a sunlight viewable display but the furuno was "ok". Can you remark further on that? Have you actually used this model or at least seen it in sunlight?

Macjazzy, if all you want is GPS, then I am going to STRONGLY suggest Garmin! Strongly ;)

Garmin has by far the best Chartplotter software, screens, menu systems, etc than any I have seen. They have long been known to be a leader in the GPS department. Don't just go for Furuno because of the name. Seriously look at the Garmin.

That said, I personally would not use Garmin's Fishfinders, and not their Radar either until it's proven itself first. Neither have been around long enough for me. I like Si-Tex, Raymarine, and Furuno for color Fishfinders, and either Furuno or JRC Radar.

But for GPS, please do yourself a favor...take a look at the Garmins.....I know many people that have switched TO Garmin after trying another line first. ;) ;)

I have a hand held Garmin 76s as my back up. I like it very much for that purpose. I am not a big fan of thier propriatary software. Bluechart is not anywhere near as good as Navionics or my preferred, C-Map Max, in my opinion. It is tough enough to develope and market a stand alone piece of electronics like a chartplotter let the dedicated chart software guys handle the charting software I feel. I have never heard anyone rave about Bluecharts. quite the contrary it seems most people do love the Garmin interface and controls but wish they would allow Navionics or C-map to develope chartware for them.

Actually I have only heard a few people that didn't like the Bluechart software....most that have used it really like it ???

It is the closest to a paper chart as you can get ;) And extremely accurate in my experience. 8)

I agree!

Well obviously everyone has their own opinion on things and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Because I have heard several poor reviews by people who have blue chart, especially in reference to updates and current information. It seems that if I think about it though it is mostly people who had something else and then got a Garmin so maybe it is just what you start out with. Regardless I have done what I feel is sufficient research and have decided on This model. It is the largest screen that will fit in the spot on the dash that I have for one reason. Another being if it is good enough for most commercial fisherman than it is probably good enough for me, overkill even. But can you really have overkill when it comes to something you may need to rely on in the dark or a storm one day to get you to a safe port?

I had the Ray C80 complete with radar last year. Went with Garmin this year on new boat mainly for chartplotter ease of use.

Update....

Got the Furuno GP7000 installed. It looks great. Almost completely fills up the space available, but I did not have to do any real surgery. It fit great. Have only been out twice so far with it so i am still learning my way around, but so far am very happy with the display and ease of use. Also the C-map max software is very easy to use and understand.

Thanks for all your help
