Generator Issues

I have a 7.3 Kohler Generator and having issues all summer. I have been getting the UU code all summer which indicates low voltage. Started there, battery checks out. Checked the impeller that is fine. Well last night after about 20 tries it started. It was was running good so after about ten minutes I put a load on it. It ran good for about another 5 minutes then stopped and came up with a code of EC69 which indicates a oxygen sensor. I tried to start it again for another 10 minuted and the UU code keeps coming up. From what I have been reading the UU code can mean just about anything . Someone said try spark plugs. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks
Steve

I had similar issues. Do run into sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't?
Try changing plugs, and set the correct gap. From the box, it'll be wrong, by a bunch. Also, part of the annual maint is setting the valve lash. Do you know if that's ever been done?

The Plugs are next. Will advise on that. Have not heard of setting the Valve lash.

This might help but maybe not. I, like many, always have to remember to start with the basics. All gas engines need the correct amount of fuel, the correct spark, and compression. They all have to arrive at the correct time too. When it doesn't start I would first start with does it have spark and does it have fuel? Sorry I missed if this is a diesel generator. Normally you will be missing one or the other. This will help in narrowing down the choices. Again, if it is a gas generator, starting fluid is a quick way to check if the problem is fuel. Good luck.

Latest Update:
Changed the Plugs and had the Injector cleaned. Started right up and ran fine until I put a load on it and it shut down. Now I am being told it is the high pressure fuel pump. They don't come cheap.

My high pressure fuel pump failed this summer too. Caused all sorts of problems. Of course I wanted to determine the cause of failure, so I disassembled the pump assembly. The high pressure pump is an assembly similar to Mercruiser's cool fuel module. Raw water on one side, and gasoline and pump on the other. It uses cooling water on one side of a chamber to keep the gasoline cool. There is a gasket on top of the dual chamber enclosure. That was the root cause of my failure. It appears that the salt water eroded the metal gasket surface, causing water intrusion into the fuel side. Not good for the pump or injector. Of course you can't get parts and rebuild the assembly. Somewhere around $500.00, for a new pump.

Thanks for that information. I will look at it when I replace it.

You should take care not to crank the genny for more than about 30 sec. If it doesn't start, stop cranking and let it rest. The Operators Manual has instructions for what to do if it won't start right away. Most diesels should start after just a couple of turns. Continuing to crank risks drawing raw water into the exhaust system, which can run back into the exhaust manifold and into the cylinders when you stop cranking. Take care and good luck.
