High Exhaust Temp alarm??

Running a new D6 400ss....This past weekend I threw a "high exhaust temp" alarm under idle for the port side engine. Cleared up once I left the no wake zone and everything seemed to run perfect: RPMS, Temp, Pressures were all spot on. Brought here back in and as soon as I spent anytime at idle the alarm came on again. I checked all my raw water strainers and cleaned them out prior to the run and on the dock since. If I run the engine on the dock she throws the same alarm code after about 2-3 mins.

My marina is a certified Volvo dealer and will take a look but I am curious if anyone else has experienced this and what the cause/fix is??

Sounds like you need to replace the water impeller. At speed you are able to force enough water through the system, but at idle you can't.

From the Volvo Certified tech..... Not sure I know what this means or that he fixed anything! I know there was a code, what it said. Strainers are clear... what does and 'inactive error code mean'? and if it is 'inactive' why does it go off every 5 minutes at idle? And what in the world does "data valid but above normal' mean?? Also worried that a Volvo tech doesn't know the center strainer is for both engines...

1] PLUG IN VODIA TO PORT ENGINE 18.5 HRS ON ENGINE. -- 1 INACTIVE ERROR CODE. MID 128 PSID 112

EXHAUST MANIFOLD TEMP SENSOR#1 “DATA VALID BUT ABOVE NORMALOPERATING RANGE”.
TRY TO CHECK SEA STRAINER ON ENGINE BUT CANNOT GET ACCESS. FOUNDSTRAINER IN CENTER OF ENGINES,
APPEARS TO BE FOR PORTENGINE.

i'm in agreement with hellrazor. likely a bad impeller...or at least a fin or two are missing on it.

inactive error code means it's not currently active...in other words, your exhaust manifold temperature is currently in the safe range and this is an old error code that has been stored.

data valid blah, blah, blah, means that the data is good..in other words the 1's and 0's are arranged properly  it also means that the value that was reported was outside of the configured safe range, i.e. 200 degrees was reported when 190 is configured as being a HOT condition (made those values up of course).

hope this helps, and good luck!

It does....

but the alarm is still a mystery. The code was coming on within minutes each time I run the boat on the dock. I spoke with the Volvo tech and he said he didn't do a thing other than to 'plug in'. Now the error code no longer comes on. In addition according to the code the engine was supposed to be in 'safe' mode as a result of the alarm - but it wasn't limited at all under power. It almost seems like it was a false error code.

definitely odd. any chance your intake was clogged? sea grass under the boat? or debris perhaps? if it's not recurring, then it might have been some temporary blockage. if it is recurring, then you need to start looking at water flow pressure at the different spots to see what's the culprit.

it's possible that the code occurred due to some blockage, then the blockage went away, and the cooling returned...which would alleviate the need for the engine to operate in safe mode.

I clear out the strainers prior to every run. The only one that has had anything in it was for the cabin AC and that runs all week long on the dock. But it appears that I am good to go. Ran the boat 3x this week with no alarms The gremlins that come with all this technology I guess....
