Hurricane Sandy Damage

So the boat decided to take herself out for a ride in the middle of a hurricane. She ended up on the wrong side of town and tangled with two other boats. Recovered with a dozen scratches in the diamond white hull, railing bent and light missing just for starters. Boating in New Jersey anybody got a recommended repair shop?

Hi Hank,

From what i have been told in the past, most likely they will need to shoot the whole side or sides. Did not get down A dock yet to see damage. Imron with clear coat is hard to blend. If anyone knos different let us know.

I don't know anyone specializing in boat imron but the guys at Chestnut Neck in the yard around back do very good work. They are very slow also... Wayne from jersey cape does good work also. They painted the hull on the 56 cruiser on C dock (blue hull hard top). I would work fast as possible because all shops will be very busy this winter into spring with repairs.

Last trip to the facroty, I had the pleasure of picking the painters brain. This is the guy that goes around and repairs all the damage that happens in house. He has no problem at all painting Imron and Clear cote. He does repairs daily. His work is flawless. I really think that someone needs to learn how its done. I wish I knew.

Thanks guys, I am working fast to get in the repair line. Insurance company agrees, repaint and re-stripe boat only way to go with emron. Also in the deal was to have out drives checked and props tuned. Making progress

Maybe talk to Chip from Comstock to see if their guys were trained to do Imron repairs? Or call Formula see.who they can recommend. The problem is the boat has been weathered so it is tough to match new paint with a few year old vessel flawlessly.

I have done gel-coat repairs on It Dont Come Easy and the color isnt perfect but someone most likely wont point it out. I used the exact gel-coat made into a paste that Formula uses. Also we sprayed Imron and its some nasty stuff. You have to find someone who can put the boat inside in a stabilized environment because all the repairs you are talking about needs to be done above a certain temp and be dust free.

Just to add, Imron is very toxic, and anyone spraying it needs a respirator with supplied air, and every part of their body covered. Had a friend that used to paint tractor trailers. He developed Imron poisoning, because his wrists were always uncovered, and the paint got absorbed into his blood stream. He is permanently disabled, and can no longer work.

One of the paint guys at the factory told me that the "pearl" finishes are much more difficult to blend-repair without the repair being noticeable under scrutiny. However, he indicated that the non-pearl finishes....particularly the darker ones, can often be seamlessly repaired under exacting conditions. That would make the Silver Diamond Pearl and Morning Sand finishes the most problematic to blend of the current color offerings.

The good news is the entire boat is getting repainted. I checked out the facility at Jersey Cape to include paint booth. I saw several recently painted boats with all looked great. Owner said he has painted several with the emron and he does all the painting. Its a go, so I'll keep you guys posted.

When do you think you'll get it into the shop? My 400SS needs a complete repaint too. If your guy does good work, I may not push to send mine back to the factory. I'm up on the Hudson.

Feel free to check out this place, owner is Wayne and Jersey Cape is on line. www.jerseycapeyachts.com or phone 609-965-8650 The company builds fishing boats but is full service marina. You can check the place out on line and call if you like what you see. Owner said he is putting on a second shift to keep up with repairwork. I counted about 25 employees when I was there and the business was surprisingly clean despite the fiberglass smell. Has a separate bay for sanding, painting and drying. He is just getting started with mine after resolving a few issues with my insurance company after marking out the damage and what needed to be replaced.
The boat, 37PC is diamond white pearl and we are getting full repaint, striping, and 20' of rubrail so we are keeping our fingers crossed hoping she looks as good as before "Sandy".

The hardest part was getting the insurance co to pay, then getting the boat into the shop. Now six months after the storm she is on her way to a new look. Labor intense. and sanded white again the start over. Waiting line at marina has grown, two years for some repairs and repaints. About 5 Formulas seen in the repair yard.
