Kohler 7.3 water pump (impeller) shaft seals ?

as preventative maintenance I decided to change the generator impeller over the weekend. I took the 4 bolts out and removed the cover, pulled on the impeller with needle nose, and the whole hosing slide off of the shaft. Ok, great....this gives me more room to work on it. When the housing came off, a seal came out with it. It looks like a bearing with a rubber cover that only covers half of it (the white piece below). There is another seal that stayed on the shaft.

When it fell out the rubber came off the seal. I put the rubber back on and put the seal in the pump housing the way I thought it should go back together (rubber side towards pump), and it is now leaking. I didn't have time to pull it back apart and try the seal the other way (rubber side away from the pump).

Has anyone had experience with this ? I found the seal kit online. just wondering if I put it in wrong, or just need new since the rubber came off ??

Here is pic of the part I found online.....part# GM35379

Be sure and find installation instructions
There is a set height for the carbon seal spring preload.
Everything must be square.
Probably has a missing snap ring which is why it came apart in the first place.
I use an arbor press to install wp seals.

I replaced both seals last night and it solved the problem.

The longer seal goes on the shaft, and the smaller seal gets pushed into the back of the housing (rubber side down). No snap rings or press needed.

Follow up to this: Where exactly is the pump located? I need to change my impeller, getting EC62. Thanks in advance.
