Kohler 7.3ECD Low CO fuel injected generator

Hi All,

I thought that others might be interested in this. I have struggled with this generator not running well for the better of the last three seasons now, and I finally have it resolved. For some background, it is in a 2008 Formula 35SS and did run well for the first few years. After that, it always started and ran, but began to loose power, surge when a load was applied, and became very loud (throaty sound) from the intake ( used to hardly hear it at all with the sound enclosure). This unit has the Kawasaki fuel-injected engine.

Over the years I have: changed the spark plugs, replaced the O2 sensor, changed the MAP sensor, replaced the intake and fuel injector (you cannot buy the injector without the intake!), adjusted the valves (which I found to be too tight), changed the crank position sensor, replaced both fuel pumps and filter, and the unit still ran terrible.

Finally, this season I bit the bullet and purchased the very pricey new exhaust and catalyst unit (stainless steel), and immediately the unit ran like it was new from the factory. Looking at the exhaust I removed, I could not see daylight through the pipe, where on the new one, I could see daylight through the screen material. That was a long haul to get this corrected, but all happy now. Hopefully it will run well for a while now.

Don
