Looking to buy a 78 F20

Hi Guys

Went and had a look at a nice F20 today. Has been re emroned(gel coat) at some point in its life and has a nice shine overall. Interior needs to be totally redone though is use able as is just looks circa 78 weathered!

I figured I would re make the engine box and sun pad area as it's a bit wobbly, seeing I am recovering them. Was also wondering about extending the engine box to make a larger sun pad, like some models came. Really love that look although you sacrifice deck space.

Bow rail has been removed as well as the wood stips on bow and dash with holes filled. I will look to re install them or perhaps just use some of the fake teak strips for grip. When I went on bow I got a little flexing when I walked down the middle and I'm 183lbs. Is this normal/ok?

Has been repowered with 05 6.2 MPI Merc and Bravo One leg. Has around 90 hrs on it. Closed cooling and exhaust goes straight out the transom.

My concern is the gas tank issue that I have seen a couple of owners have plus the fact I can't see under the deck. The deck did have one soft spot next to the forward port corner of the gas tank as I can see it's outline under the deck. Carpet has been removed. I will post a photo of the rear of the tank as it looks stainless to me and I had read the factory tank is aluminum.

The current owner has had the boat 3 yrs and it was the previous owner, who was a marine mechanic that built the boat. Unfortunately he passed away and the current owner was not aware of the fuel tank issue or if it was the original.

I am going to buy a little endoscope cam that you can use with your cell phone and get him to pump the tank dry.

Rest of the floor felt great and besides a few minor gelcoat issues the boat seems solid. Seeing the carpet has been removed I will look to put some fake teak decking down as Klas' boat looks awesome.

Any other areas I need to look at?

This will be my first powerboat. Have looked at some newer boats but really love the old school looks of the earlier girls. That's probably due to the fact I restore muscle cars for fun.

Thanks for your help.

Old boats all have unseen problems, the issue is figuring out how it will cost to fix. If it has water next to the gas tank and its aluminum (which it should be) then more then likely the tank will need to come out and repaired or replaced

I realize it's an old boat which may have unseen problems. I am hoping someone can tell by looking at the photo of the gas tank end whether it looks like the original tank or not. I don't know if it has water next to the tank or not.

Nice pics you can plug off the fill ventand pressurize the tank with about 10 to 15 lbs and see if tank leaks if no leaks should be able to poke tank compartment to get to drain and what i suggest to my customers with the dog house seating is to make a bench seat and one big platform set it up like a mariah bench seat and it gives alot of room for service

Thanks for the info.
I don't understand what you mean by "be able to poke tank compartment to get to drain".

I had that very thought about making one big bench and swim pad as I love that look. Though I would lose some deck space I would gain seating.
