I would appreciate any advice on changing my 98' 41PC Port engine impeller (Cummins 450 Diamonds).
Starboard looks easy, but...
I can barely see the dang pump on the port engine, can anyone share their experience?

I have the same boat with Volvos. Same situation, can hardly see the pump. The answer is, it's a lousy job. I used one of those cheap CVS round counter top mirrors and rested it under the pump so I could see it. Armed with 1/4 inch drive swivel sockets and long extensions, small open end wrenches and every other tool I could think of to make it easier it was at least a six hour job. My chest hurt for a couple of days. It's been three years so I'm due again but reluctant to do it.

I bar the engine over 1/4 turn every month in the winter so the pump doesn't take a set also installed fresh water flush hoping to extend impeller life...Good luck, it sucks!

seems like someone on the forum once said that their tech told them it couldn't be changed so i guess that is always an option ;D i believe i recall replying that they should immediately seek out another better qualified tech.

i've never seen one so i can't help but i think i would study the easy one real good first. use it as the "learning curve" by experimenting with different tools. i sometimes find that once i figure out the correct tool configuration things ain't so bad.

BTW, the pump is on the opposite side on the Volvo, so its the starboard which is a bear. TN is right, do the easy one first.

Thanks for the help.
I also thought that doing the easy one and then Immediately going on to the
left one that I have to do by touch only, with mirrors and grabbers, cover engine with padding and lay on it, carefully.
Should work out.

Well I the staboard side done in about 20 Minutes, and the port side in about 3.5 hours. The aftercooler zinc left a painful bruise on my chest even with blankets and a pillow. would have been easier if I was left handed. I did have a friend help, we traded off as we got cramps and frustration. Much better to have two people.
Next job, the serpentine belt replacement!

I removed the Cockpit Icemaker and removed the hatch in the floor under the Icemaker, just to see what kind of access it provided, and was able to reach all the way to the far port stringer, where I saw a screwdriver we had left there during R&R of Impeller. I used this access to check for tightness of our hoseclamps. The Fridge is held in with two screws at bottom behind the grill. Do not use the door to pull, it will break. A new door is $140-$170 from apdepot dot com . Now the fridge looks new. Next time Impeller should be much easier.

Cummins port engine access

I know this is an old post but I learned this today and wanted to share. Proper way to do this on a 41pc is through the aft stateroom closet. Close the through hull water supply. There is an access panel in the back of the closet. Remove that and you can reach in there and remove the pump housing. Remove the housing and replace impeller. If the impeller is missing vanes as was mine you should back wash the cooling system till the missing bastards appear. Hard nocks.

Yes, It's an old thread, but we still need to replace impellers and gain access. I finally decided to look into this and IT'S TRUE !!!
Take the four small screws out to remove the "fake" wall and then you can unscrew the access door. I'll post a picture. Now to get in the closet to do the work..... I'll take the phone with me, just in case I can't get back out. LOL

Glad to help. Fixing to install Seadek. Installed in my Whaler and like it, as does my dog. Will provide pictures when finished.

Purchased a 1997 41 pic a year ago as a project-Cummins Diamond engines
To work on the port raw water pump my attack was to remove enough to lay along the side of the engine for access to the pump which included the intercooler
Took more time but gave me good access to the trans cooler
Found more than one impellers worth of debris in the cooler

Just took ownership of 2000 41PC with Volvo's and while crawling around in engine room I noticed an interesting recess in insulation in front of SB motor which appears to be behind the cushion in the aft, will investigate further. Previous owner did P himself and paid someone to do SB. Time will tell.

I take my after cooler off to do it, takes an extra 10 minutes but theres no way for me to reach it otherwise. Still a pain with it off.
