Smartcraft GPS and Raymarine problems

My 400SS Came loaded with Smartcraft and Raymarine E120 and Autopilot, radar and sirius weather. I have been having problems with these systems from day one and found out a few things.

The smartcraft 5000 display was intermittant with problems, GPS on the smartcraft would work sometimes other not, it is connected to a Garmin 16 HVS GPS receiver for the signals to compute speed heading and fuel range etc... The problem I found is that the smartcraft system is not totally compatable with version 2.0 of the NEMA 0183 protocol. The "GSV" and "VTG" sentences overload the buffer on the smartcraft display. The system will still work but the sentences will cause "data Loss" I only found this out from the smartcraft technical guide 90-891965. The problem sentences can be disabled in the garmin gps but you have to use a laptop and serial connection along with "Garmin sensor configuration software" available from garmin under downloads. After reprogramming the garmin unit all is fine now.

The raymarine system was having multiple problems like suhtting down and restarting and the auto pilot would keep wandering off the true heading. It all was fixed by doing a master reset. A easy fix for problems that just I worked on for hours. This is more of a tip than anything.

Hope this helps someone.
