Taking on a sweet sixteen donzi

I have recently aquire a 1970 1700 my goal is to beat my bosses sweet sixteen donzi my question is has anyone put a step or planing pad on this hull

A step on a 17' will not do very much and will be a lot of work. Your best bet is a pad. There are several threads on this on the Donzi sites (.org & .net) and I'm sure someone has covered it over at Scream & Fly.

As both hulls are 24* deadrise and 7' beam with similar LOA and strake layout.... the determining factor for "beating" your boss will be in the powertrain and rigging.

What are you using for an engine & drive? or is your 1700 an o/b? What does your boss have?

BTW: love to see some pics :)

Hey woods sounds like you pretty knowledgeable with these boats will post some pics as soon as I figure out how too...haha I'm a boat mechanic not an office stapler

Those boats are pretty rare. The Original 1965 Formula Jr. Hull mould was modified in 1969 and given a new deck (a couple of decks, actually) to make a stop-gap model for just 2 model years while a new 17 was being designed. They were available as closed deck, bow-rider, with o/b or i/o drive.

The original Jr. design was usurped by the DONZI 16 Ski Sporter in the sales arena and never really recovered. (As we know, the Donzi was wildly successful) This led to the modifications on the Jr. in order to update the look (remove the "old" looking tumblehome) and set the model apart, while appealing to other segments of the market to increase sales.
