We went sharking yesterday at the Mudhole. Started by chasing a dragger after he hauled his net but all he kept tossing over were tons of dogfish! We gave up after 3.5 miles of following him LOL. The dogfish he was tossing was NOT a good sign!

So we went back to the northern end of the Mudhole and trolled a spread south thru. Passed the Tuna fleet and kep heading a little further south. Nothing.

Pulled the spread in and set up south of the Tuna Fleet. VERY SLOW morning, but beautiful water, high 60's temp, VERY VERY clear!

Dogfish were stealing baits progressively worse as the day went on, so we livelined one we hooked on the 90' bait and sent it back down and way out. Have to adapt to the conditions you're dealt!

The other baits we kept tabs on and replacing when necessary.

11:30 we had something interested in our deep dogfish and kept making runs. I free-spooled it and let it eat, and when it made a final long run, I "set the hook". After about 10 minutes, we get the shark within sight, and a big thresher lets the bait go and turns sideways in front of us, and disappears! He never ate it, but was hanging on the whole time! Bastard. lol

No idea on the size due to the water depth, but I CAN say it was NICE!

We pulled the bait and checked out the teeth marks. We ended up sending it back down, as it was now bleeding nicely.

We kept on chumming, and when we hooked another dog on the 60' bait we put it back out there as-is.

Dogs never screwed with the 30' bait, so we left that one.

No more hits the rest of teh day and the wind dropped out to nothing, which killed us, and our chum wound up attracting 100 dogfish to the surface at the end of the day!!!! They were ALL OVER!!!!!!

Called it quits at 3:30 and headed in. Smooth ride.

A friend of mine had a GBFT on for over 2 hours right near us, before chafing it off.....that had to suck, I felt bad.

Sounds like alot of fun! I've never been shark fishing, and this may be a dumb question, but why would the dragger tossin' dogfish be a bad sign?

It was telling me the place was loaded with doggies before we even found out the hard way. When draggers pull their nets, I like to see only a few to no doggies, and then regular bycatch like whiting, pollock, ling etc, being swept off the deck (so we can scoop it ;D)

This dragger's net was so damn full, it didn't look like it would fit thru the opening at the stern LOL....he had to get moving pretty good to "draw the net out" and kind of "float it" before he hauled it on.......because there were so many damn doggies in it LOL.
