Is there a special tool to hold the spring tensioner while changing belt?

Yes, there is a special metal tool for this job. Rough steps include using the metal pulley tool by installing it into the pulley edge and setting it around the tensioner arm of the alternator. The thumb screw is tightened down and unit is pulled against the spring to loosen the supercharger belt. Belt can than then be changed and screw reversed to put tension back on belt.

I bought a spider oil filter wrench from napa. it has 3 prongs that will grasp the idler and a 3/8 breaker bar to spin it. 1/10th the price of the factory tool

grabs the spring housing, not the pulley. The early style tensioners had a simple, easy, way easy, square hole cast in the arm so we could use a 3/8" drive breaker bar with extension to relieve the spring. GM tensioners have that hole still. I wonder if they are the same? My new 370 does not have spring tensioners.

Good to know! My 2007 400 SS supercharger Clutch seized up and threw the belt. I'd have found out about this tool the hard way! Thanks!
