I took the exhaust elbows off my engines to inspect and the cast iron is getting a little corroded thin from the saltwater cooling. I'm going to look at replacing both of the elbows. At about $1,000 each not a glamorous way to spend money. I'm going to look into having some stainless after market ones made. This is just a heads-up to other 41 owners. If the elbows fail internally they could kill the engine. I'll report back with research on stainless and post some pictures too.

Isn't 9 yrs of saltwater use considered good for either a diesel or exhaust system used in saltwater ??

Nothing is "in-expensive" with a diesel. Looks at some of the prices for turbos, compressors, and intercoolers for the d4 and D6 volvo diesels

Agreed, 9 -10 years is a lot to ask of saltwater cooled exhaust parts. I'm attaching a picture of the elbow so you can get a sense of the corrosion. It's actually a pretty good design. The inner water jacket is a stainless sleeve. You can't tell if it's any good or not without taking it off, it looks great from the outside!
