Water Flow - what is normal?

Trying to figure out what kind of water discharge flow is considered normal from my yanmar 440s?- I see mostly a trickle out the aft holes?

What is the set up on your boat? If you have inboards like mine the main exaust is under water. If you have out drives it is probably through the drives.

i had a 40PC with the Yanmar 440s a while back. when i did the sea trial we noticed that water came out of one side, but not the other while at idle. I asked if it was an issue, and the inspector said it was normal.

fast forward 3 years and I sell it...same thing at sea trial, and the buyer asks the same...i give him the canned answer. a year later he sees me and says that it bugged him so much he started taking things apart. he found some sort of obstructions just inside of the overboard discharge. it wasn't clear to me if it was just a plate with a bunch of holes in it, or more of a heat exchanger setup. either way, he said he cleaned the heck out of it, and it started spitting water out just like the other side at idle.

in general, the overboard had a good bit of water going out of it...not generator sized, but still more than a trickle. i think the overboard is used while at idle, while the underwater is only used at higher RPMs. I was told this is because there's too much back pressure from the underwater exhaust at idle. if you have no water, or only a trickle, i would investigate.

hope this helps,
