Hello...

Strange issue.

Ran my genny for the first time....ran for 8 hours no issue.

Came back to dock, checked this out and my overflow remote tank was void of Anti Freeze for Genny.

Figured no worries, will top her off....

Did that, fired up genny and it started DRINKING the Anti Freeze. Ended up adding a full gallon before I quite.

I dont see any leaks and genny never overheated...but something must be wrong.

Of course genny i tough to get at since where enclosed and located in sound enclosure. I got the front panel off, and all looked pristine. But i just realized i did not check the oil, which i will but....any other ideas ?

Jedd,
If there are no visible signs of leaks, it Could possibly be the heat exchanger leaking internally. You will have to have it pressure checked to verify.

It could be that your genny was super low on coolant. It's impossible to check the coolant level of my Westerbeke 7.6 BTD in our 400SS. When I changed the coolant in our genny last season about 1/2 gallon came out and a gallon went in, which is the coolant capacity of the generator. If this is the case, you're lucky you haven't overheated it.

Yeah no overheat....or not that I know of....no way to monitor I dont think.

I guess I can keep adding anti freeze..

If I overheat, it will shut down, correct ?

The puke tank on these is kinda cheesy how its piped to the gen on the 400SS, may be different on a PC. You can actually remove the enclosure panel by panel. I would look at the hose connected to the puke tank. It passes through the cutout area on the end panel, I bet it has a abrasion where it goes through the enclosure. Oh BTW I gave up on the rubber snubbers holding this together. I bought some marine bungees from WM and ran them across the panels to hold it. works great

I have a thread in this section about how I changed the coolant in my generator. Might be helpful to you. And, yeah, you will want to shut it down if she overheats. I wish there were dash gauges that would monitor generator vitals.

Silly follow-up question....

My 31PC had a gas Kohler genny...she would auto shutdown in a overheat.

how do I know if my new westerbeak is over heating ?

Jedd,
I believe it will shut down on low oil pressure and high temperature (overheat). Your schematic will show you the safety circuit.

The hose from the tank to the generator was brittle and leaking on mine so the tank was always low until I figured it out. It's tough to work on them and see what is going on.

Late to the dance on this one, but GSENT is correct. Your generator will automatically shut itself down if it overheats. I still would prefer to have gauges on the dash that monitor temperature, oil pressure, etc. This fire it up and forget about it can be nerve-wracking; besides, these are expensive units.

toofast, did you ever get it resolved?
