will be the first to post. does anyone have any idea what the 72 formula 20 foot boat with the ford cobra 302 hp rateing is ?

Is it a 2-BBL or 4-BBL Carb? Usually it is stated on the valve cover.... 188HP, 215HP.....if 2 BBL...

If 4-BBL, and IF it has the 351W Heads and a more aggressive cam with bigger valves, like mine does, it is rated 225HP.

all it says on the engine, is cobra powerd by ford, its got a holley 4 barel carb on it, dont know alot about it, always had merc 350's or 454's so new ball game for me.

yup i think your right 74 formula. The 302 is a good motor but i would want the 351 if i had the ford power. When i was a kid my mom and dad had a 1976 Sea Sprite 20 footer tri-hull open bow. Kind of a goofy boat but had a trs drive and 255hp would pull 4 skiers ON ONE SKI AND RUN 42 mph doing it  that was a fun boat ;D ;D

They are both good motors but the 302 was more efficient. Many of the same hulls that had the 225HP 302 ran the exact same speed as the 351W versions for some reason.

This was explained to me by my mechanic, who is very familiar with these powerplants from back then. The HP rating didn't seem to mean much when comparing the "tweaked" 302 vs. the 351W....dunno why but it was like that.... ??? ;)

it always seemed to me when i ran a 225hp merc ford and a 228hp merc chevy the chevy seemed to have better low end power, when i compared the rod to stroke ratio and stroke the longer unit would have more low end.
