stereo stopped working this week. the original kenwood was replaced with a jensen by the previous owner. worked fine until this week. The stereo itself seems to be working, lights ect are lit, just no sound out of any of the speakers on the boat, leading me to believe it could be an amp issue. I havn"t dug into it yet. I need to find the keys that release the stereo, so i can pull it out. However I have a Question: WHERE IS THE AMP LOCATED ??? can't seem to find it. The boat is a 2001 41pc.

Ok. Before you dig into this make sure there is not a blown inline fuse that is causing this. Typically its a blue wire that switches the amp on and off, which is not typically fused but you never know. The amp is mounted behind the left most back cushion of the crescent shaped setee as you're facing it. If you unscrew the cushion you will have full access to the amp. Lift the bottom cushion up (above the AC unit) and you will be able to reach the screws. I believe the amp has a fuse but I'm not positive.

the amps should have fuses built into them, or right next to them. typically they plug into the side of the amp where the power wires come out. you should definitely check the amp before yanking the head unit. put a multimeter on the power, and the 'switched' power wire that Sun was talking about right next to the amp. if you can confirm power to the amp, check the RCA connections to make certain nothing came loose. if secure at the amp, then check the head unit for loose connections (good possibility if the head unit has recently been replaced).

let us know what you find...good luck!

Thanks for the info guys. I located the amps , removed and checked the fuses. All fuses were good. I reinstalled fuses and reset the breaker a couple times and now the system is working. No idea what was wrong , maybe a weak breaker. ??? should i be turning the breaker for the amps off when not in use?

ok......just was brainstorming on the way home from a long trip driving & i may have found a possible reason for your problem.
I have a 2001 40pc with the original kenwood amps & a newer clarion head unit, this exact problem arose about two months ago & then just reappeared two weeks ago.
Formula installs a solenoid behind the electrical panel for the amps, when you flip the "amp' breaker you will hear a loud click, that is the solenoid activating.
If the stereo breaker is on first, there is power to the stereo hence the stereo is trying to turn on the amps. Then when you flip the "amp" breaker there is a load on the breaker/solenoid immediately which is not a great thing. This creates a slight spark & will melt/corrode/burn/etc. the contacts in the solenoid which will then not always make contact when switched on.
So even though the solenoid sounds like it is activating there may be a issues with the contacts engaging sometimes & not others.
If the "amp" breaker was always switched on first or the you knew for a fact that the stereo was always in the OFF mode prior to switching on the "amp" breaker then this may not happen.
The original Kenwood may have had some way to ensure this didn't happen but newer stereos may not.
Let me know if this makes sense.
Good Luck
