2008 34PC: New Electronics?

Just refit my 07 34. Raymarine 12'' Axiom+, 9'' Axiom+, and an Evolution 200 Autopilot Corepack, including a P70RS Autopilot control head. Very very pleased. And may I add that while I was at it, the addition of fully hydraulic steering and integration of autopilot took this boat to an entirely different level. It was a quantum leap forward that I can't believe I ever did without.

We were torn between the Raymarine Axiom and Garmin (anything NMEA200 capable). Was about to commit to the Axiom but then saw a Garmin 94 SV on sale at West Marine for $699, so I got two. Very pleased with the setup. Got the SmartCraft Connect NMEA2000 Gateway. All plug and play. Plus we have connectivity with our new Fusion Apollo. Out with the old VesselView in with the new Garmins. For you pilots out there it's like going from a Classic 737-400/500, skipping the NG, and straight to the MAX 8/9. Also had the panel wrapped in a Vinyl Carbon Fiber "skin".

I still wanted Navionics Cartography, which was one of the reasons I stuck with Raymarine. I know Garmin purchased Navionics, but they still had a Blue Charts display when I was doing the refit last Winter. Nothing wrong with that look...just not what I was used to. If I understand correctly, the very newest Garmin software facilitates user-selectable Navionics or Blue Chart cartography. Anyhow, the 12" Raymarine also had larger screen area than the Garmin equivalent, which was another minor factor. The downside with Raymarine though is the Autopilot disconnect function. I wish Raymarine had the "Shadowdrive" circuit (optional) that disconnects the autopilot when the steering wheel is turned, but it does not. Unlikely, but the time needed to push a button to turn off the Raymarine AP, then steer out of the way of a threat is noteworthy. In extreme circumstances, it could make a difference. Raymarine also makes the operator acknowledge each waypoint on a route, whereas Garmin leaves the operator alone, makes the turns without input, ect... Guess Raymarine figured some people may just turn on the autopilot and go downstairs,ect... That can't be done with Raymarine, but could with the Garmin AP...no matter how foolhardy that would be. I suspect the corporate lawyers had something to do with that issue at Raymarine.

Nice upgrade you did. Enjoy it.

Please let us know what you find out with your research. I also have raymarine that I would like to upgrade.
Now you've given Jed another reason to spend money on the boat. 😂🤣😂

That being said I went from an inoperative Simrad display and Radar and chose Raymarine ES127 display 4 years ago and am installing the Quantum2 Radar. I like the new lighthouse 3/4 OS vs the old Raymarine OS.
