271 FASTech Trim Limit Adjustment

Also posted at OSO but decided to cross-post here in case there is anyone with specific 271 suggestions based on personal experience....

Need to adjust the Trim Limit and Position Sender switches on my Bravo 1 behind the bone-stock Gen VI 502 Mag MPI in my 2000 271 FASTech. Found the Merc instructions here:
https://www.mercstuff.com/trim_limit.htm

Any feedback or recommendations from "real world" experience regarding the Merc-suggested dimension? (FYI: I have not done the spacer swap to improve 0-to-plane time...)

First, make sure it's not already correct. Trim all the way up until it stops.

It should stop at: 21 3/4" max. You can set it for less... anyway:

just go ahead and get the manual:

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1348074/Mercury-Bravo.html

Starts 4A-6 I think

I adjust the sender by setting up my iphone to facetime my ipad from the dash, so I can see the gauge as I move the sender... or if you have a helper that works too.

I put the drive all the way down, and set that to zero on my gauge.

Got it, thanks! Downloaded the manual. Ahh... Nice to have crisp print and color! Checking current setup is def first on the list. Facetime! Brilliant...

Well, it turns out it measured 22" pin-to-pin fully out. Extra 1/4" should be fine, so I left it there. I double-checked the sender and it would get to the zero line when the drive would get to full-in, so that was correct as well. I was then back at what started this all: In full trim out, the gauge only gets to about 80% of the "max labeled range". I am now presuming this is normal, or perhaps that these type of trim gauges are not all that precise/accurate.

thats about as good as its going to get on these old systems. ive only ever worried about making zero full down. thats about all you can do, without modern digital, computer run systems.

you could replace the sender and or guage, but really youre just looking at a lot of work for not much gain, possibly none.

Thanks, I agree. Going to leave as is and ignore my OCD flaring  given that its showing what I need and at least now I know the full range to use as a visual reference. Now I just need to polish the plastic on those gauges to take out some of the clouding.

wait - is the 80% on the display where it lands when you hit the trim limit?

the gauge should go up more then when you use the trailer up button...

alternatively- you can do a mechanical gauge if you want the best - that's what higher end boats + race boats use.

Looking online, looks like around $400-$600 for this setup. or just live w/it.

Yes. 80% at trim limit @22" pin-to-pin at the drive. And gauge does go max up with trailer drive up.

Will live with it just fine. I'll make sure to look for mechanical gauges throughout when I move up to a bigger boat...
