291 or 272 for commuting?

Ok Guys,

A serious question or questions... I live in CT and I have a business on Long Island. 43 miles by car and 13 by boat. I've used my 41 pc to commute a few times but it's kind of a production running the boat by myself not to mention a little heavy on the fuel and docking expenses. Time wise, given transit time in two harbors at 5 mph and a 26 knot cruise it's about a wash with the 1 hour drive time. The good news is it beats being stuck in traffic. Can you see where my twisted logic is taking me? Anyway, I am seriously considering a smaller boat to use as a commuter, I might do something like a regulator 26. on the other hand I loved my little 242 so I started thinking about another Formula. My budget is 40K. I want something close to 30 feet, but not over, because I am looking at the expense of renting 2 slips. I need the length to deal with the common 2 foot chop in Long Island Sound. I want a 40 MPH cruise. The 272 with a single big block is appealing to me from the stand point of simplicity. Any body know if I can cruise comfortably at 40 MPH in one of those? I'd rather not go to twins, but if I did, I would probably go to the 29, just because the added length is going to give me a better ride. Advice please! Thanks Guys!

That's what puts the Regulator on the short list. On the other hand there's a ton of PC's out there with outdrives, so being wet stored is not a deal killer. On the other hand, that's also why I don't want to spend a ton of money. I'm going to beat the boat up as a commuter. Still very interested if any body has some performance numbers for me on a 271 with a single big block... Thanks!

given our recent hurricane and nor-easter, I hope this finds you well. We have a 2000 271 fastech w/ a fuel injected 502 and upgraded manifolds and risers. we cruise all day @ 40-45 on the gps, rides like a caddy. good luck.

I have a 1990 272 SR1 with 2 new big blocks from pro Roc in brick new Imco steering new trailer thinking about selling cruises at 50 at 3500 great riding boat

Thanks for the thought mthammer. My " logic" behind going with the 271 is the simplicity of a single engine. If I was going to go with twins I think I would go with a bigger boat..

I loved my 271, it was a SR1 not a fastech, with a 502 in the later stages of it life the boat would run 58-60 in perfect conditions, always 55, it would roll thru 2/3ft chop w/o issues treated me very well, the fastech version of the 271 with a 502 efi in good shape is a 63-65 mph boat
