31PC Raw Water Thru Hulls

Hi All
I am considering upgrading my '98 31PC's engine cooling to using thru hull fittings with sea strainers. Has anyone gone through this and if so any tips? Would love so see pics of where you mounted the strainers and placed the thru hulls.
Also, I have read where a few folks claim that Merc suggests to tee this into the existing raw water line rather than eliminating the old water line. Some have also suggested that trying to install the blockoff plate is a gamble in itself due to potential corrosion and the stainless bolt pulling out the aluminum threads.
I am not having any overheating issues; both motors (closed cooling) run around 175-180.
Thoughts?
