33 ss 6.2's

can anyone tell me if I will be unhappy with the 6.2's in the 33? is it a dog out of the hole? is the 33 a dog out of the hole with 8.1's?

I have a 2005 with v/p duoprop 496's. It pops on plane in no time and I have seen 60mph on gps (only once or twice actually) Its midrange could be better but I do not know how it could be any better planing out. It comes up level and quick with no tabs at all. I believe alot of that is due to the duoprop drives. 6.2's would use bravo three's I believe. Do not buy this boat if it has bravo one's. I think you will be very dissappointed.

That being said when I researched buying my boat I found two magazines that did tests on the 330ss. One used small blocks, one used bigblocks. What decided it for me was the bigblocks got better fuel economy at cruise speed. Which says to me that they are working less to maintain the same speed. Possibly pointing to the small blocks being over worked. The top speed drop off was only about 4-5 mph and at top speed the bigblocks really outdrank the small blocks, but how much does anyone run these boats flat out?

Keep in mind, Horsepower=top speed Torque=holeshot, correctly propped I think you wont see much difference in the launch, but top speed will differ. if you plan on high speed cruising go with big blocks an prop for speed and give up some on the hole-shot. My motors only advertise 260HP but the boat gets on plane like a 26 footer!

I have the 31PC which is a heavier boat with twin 6.2 BIII and I was worried about it in the begining. I believe they are just prfect for the boat and get me on plane in no time. I had it full with gas, water, 6 adults, and 5 kids and was able to get on plane without tabs and not much additional effort. I also was able to cruise at 30MPH at about 3500RPM with no problem. I can easily get to 43MPH.

If you want a higher top speed then go with the 8.1 and it will also give you a better hole shot from But I think the 6.2 is good enough if you are comfortable with it's performance numbes and it will not be a dog in anyway.

Let me check my formula spec book for 04

330 SS Merc twin MX 6.2 MPI BrIII 320 prop hp prop code TBIII26

RPM MPH GPH
2500 23 15
3000 29 17
3500 36 21
4000 43 29
4500 49 35
5000 50 46
5250 53 49

top speed 52-55mph

I agree with what everyone is saying. I think you will be happy with the holeshot/planing on either boat as long as its equipped with a twin prop drive. My point was I think that the big blocks are better suited for this boat because at the same cruise speed they get better mileage than the small blocks, per the magazine test I read on the boat. So if you have a deal on a boat with small blocks you will be fine. If you have the choice I think bigblocks are a better choice as far as longevity and wear on the engines goes.

The spec book only picks specific engine packages to break down by RPM. Then it just generalizes top speed on the other packages. sorry.

For the 496 MAG BrIII X 375 Prop HP top speed is 56-59 mph turning 26 props.

Thats all I got.

Boattest.com did a test on the 330ss with small blocks, Powerboating did a test of it with bigblocks. I realize there may be some differences in testing and neither is really the "gospel" for what each individual boat may see under all conditions. I just used it as a general guide. Which is what I think most of those tests are good for.

I'll take a 10HP dighy for now just to get out on the water. As long as the boat fits your needs then you will be happy no matter what power plant it has.

I have to agree with all past comments...tests should be taken lightly...and what ever makes you happy is all thats important..am I gonna be reaching for more throttle no matter what I drive? I want a good quality boat that runs a respectable speed. Is that formula? great to talk with you all! pray for sun!!

Formula will definitly give that performance and ride that you can alway enjoy. Like I always said, they are incredible hulls.
