40 PC Stereo Upgrade

Guys,

I recently signed up for the Amazon HD Unlimited Music subscription and have been spending quite a bit of time comparing the sound quality of HD and Ultra HD music to Pandora's Premium service. I'm blown away by how much better Amazon HD music sounds and will soon be cancelling my Pandora Premium subscription. For those of you on Pandora I strongly suggest you sign up for the 90 free trial of Amazon unlimited HD and hear the difference for yourself. I used the app STAMP to transfer all of my playlists on Pandora to Amazon. Check it out!

Those look like the same speakers I'm replacing with the C2-690's......JL Audio is a much better speaker manufacturer than Kenwood....you cant go wrong.

So I have swapped to a 40PC and the salon speakers are now different. They are: Kenwood KFC-1652MRB which are 6.5" round.

What would be a good replacement for these in a JL Audio?

Shane, did you use the M6's behind the factory mesh grille in the salon? I had to return my M3-650's that I planned to install in the salon because the M6 grilles are not removable to fit within the woodwork cutout and behind the mesh. So, I'm using a pair of JL C2's in the salon and a pair of M6's in the V-birth.

oh oops. I guess maybe the ones I ordered from West Marine won't fit in the salon. If that's the case I'll just replace a pair on the cockpit.

Which should I order for the salon? That doesn't have the bulky grill?

I'm using a pair of JL Audio C2-650x 6 1/2" driven by a JL Audio 400/4 amp. I copied that part of my system upgrade this winter from RC's original system upgrade. I'm still finishing up my system upgrade that I started at the beginning of March before the virus delays really kicked in.

In the salon I used C2-690's....I too need to upgrade the V birth speakers...forgot about those LOL!

I keep saying salon but I really mean the Dinette area in the cabin. Those are the C2-650x's (6.5"). I already had 2 pair of the M3 650's and the 400/4 amp for the entire cabin before I realized the M3's would not fit the cabinets so they got returned for the C2's that the grilles can be removed for installation.

Very good. I also installed a 10" JL Audio car audio sub in the stateroom closet....makes a HUGE difference:

So my salon (dinette are) speakers are 6.5 round. So for those I would want to get the C2-650x's?

Yes, typo in my previous note....I used C2-650's in my salon to replace the 6.5 Kenwoods.

Note: The OEM cutouts are a tad bit too small so I ended up using a putty like insulation material to fill the slight gap are the circumference of the speaker rather than enlarge the hole.

I also took the JL Audio logos that come with the speakers and stuck them to the outer grill.

RC, today I tried a test install of the C2's in the dinette OEM cutouts after your comment. I see what you mean. The counterbore for the speaker flange is large enough but the actual hole is not. Crap! I'm going to do some size comparison's and consider cutting the hole a little larger - maybe.

Great news. The M6 650s fit perfectly in the dinette area holes. They're even counter sunk far enough so the grill is not bulging out. I'll just have to drill some new mounting screw holes which is fine.

Question: The existing speakers just have the 2 wires but the 650s have all these extras, 3x2 inputs and another 2 thin wires, see pic attached. Do I need to bother with these?

Those are different than my M6-650's. You may have LED's in which case you can follow the wiring installation instructions in you speaker manual. I have had excellent service from submitting requests for technical support with JL Audio via their website - link below.

That's pretty slick! it's a crossover built right on to the speaker itself. the tiny wires go to your tweeter, the larger ones go to your woofer. you just plug them into the spade connectors on that crossover. black to (-), red to (+). then your just left with the 2 innermost spade connectors which you connect to your amp. nice setup...

So what you're saying is like in the pic below? (Only 1 side diagrammed but of course same for the other)
