400SS Diesel Engine Removal

Really hoping that I never actually need this information but I'm curious to hear from those who have been down this road. What is the process for removing the motors on a diesel 400ss? Drives and hatch obviously has to come off but after that how much work is involved. I would think a lull would be the right tool for the job or maybe a forklift with fork extensions.
Thanks Aaron

Its not fun. You do need a chainfall of some sort. A lull is not fine enough control to not break stuff in or out. Drives off, hatch trunk off, unbolt everything. Pick up starboard and move over a bit and set down on blocks in the boat, pull port out then pull starboard out.

I'll preface by saying I've used everything from backhoes and forklifts to chainfalls to remove engines.

The real RIGTH tool for the job is a crane. Period. After working with someone that had a work truck with a 5 ton boom crane, it was the easiest engine pull I have ever done. Combined with a chain leveler, being able to remote control the crane while next to the engine is absolutely game changing. I then had to hire a crane to put them back in (long story) but wound up being a full 50 ton truck crane. 1million times overkill, but also the second best method for pulling and installing engines.

A lull will work, so will a backhoe, so will a forkliift... all with the right operator and signal man. But you asked for the right tool for the job, and that is a crane.

I've used a crane, used an overhead winch, and through it all swore up and down my next boat will have outboards. So whatever you do... take some pics / time-lapse videos for the rest of us to watch!
