400SS Replacement Microwave

I figured I would post this in case anyone wants to replace theirs... I looked everywhere and could not find a replacement that was same size. The Tappen in 9-5/8" tall, and the smallest thing I could find was 10.2" tall. Either way I pick up the smallest thing I could find at Walmart and went to work.

Here's what I did, this may or maynot work for you so proceed with cation. First get the old microwave out. It probably has some screws from the back you can get to via the garbage can but you will have to pull out the drawers and pull off the front of the cabinets. Once your in you will see there is a block that is pushing down on the microwave, take that out and the microwave will pull out.

Once it's out you should see that there is a 1/2" board the the old microwave is sitting on. Taking this out should buy a little extra room. Before you put the new microwave in grind the metal and plastic feet off of the microwave case. Get the new microwave put in and reassemble the cabinets. That final step is you need to remove the door face on the cabinet below the microwave. It is screwed and tapped on but mine came off pretty easy. Lower the door face about a 1/4" and then shim the latch hardware down so the door will still latch. At this point the new one should fit and everything should work as it's supposed to... Hope this help

Still have that microwave?
So to take it out, the cabinets around it come out (easy) but does the wood around it have to come out too? Mine has a wood frame around it and seems the current microwave feet are screwed in or something and it won?t slide out. Might take a hammer to this thing.

I still have the microwave all boxed and ready to ship if someone wants it. I upgraded mine to the 2018 model but it is not a straight forward addition, lots to customize behind the microwave and you also have to order a new panel from Ebel to make it all work. PM me if anyone is interested.

I?m interested. I?m going to take measurements and double check. I have a 1999 40ss and might be different size.

there was a post on this in Yachts too where i posted some pics. you might need to post some pics if it's really different then what's already here. i'd guess...no experience on the SS...that once you get the drawer below out if you stick your head in there, you'll see some screws holding the base of the microwave in place. pull those out, and it should slide out...at least that's how it works in the 45...

good luck

There is a "block" or a "wedge" that pushes down on the microwave from the top. You need to get that out to get the microwave out. I'm pretty sure the cabinet face has to come off.

I saw the wedge pushing down, and it seems the feet sit in blocks as well. I looked under and there is no screws going up. I really don?t want to take the cabinet face off, unless it is simple (couple screws?). Not sure how it comes off.

I?ve debated taking some tools to the old microwave to disassemble / break it to get it out. Then take out any blocks/ wedges that might make it hard to put a new one in. Even if I can slide a new one in, then just L bracket it in the back I?ll be happy.

Thoughts on taking that cabinet face off?

It’s not hard to take the cabinet face off. Take your time and find the screws. The grab rail is through bolted and rest is just wood screws. One you get all the drawers out you will see them. Shouldn’t take longer than 20-30 minutes to get it off.

I am pretty pissed I didn't check back and see your comment before I went after it. I pulled out all the drawers and realized there is 1 piece of finish trim left on all the cabinets. One side was double sided sticky taped, the other screwed in where the microwave opening was (previous owner double sided sticky taped it). Well after not figuring out where the screw where (not reading your post) I smashed up the microwave pretty good and got it out. Luckily no damage. Once out, I realized the microwave was sitting on a 1/2" piece of wood that was screwed from below. If I had unscrewed that (like you said) then it would slide right out. I figured Formula wouldn't make things impossible . Now I am going to install the new one the proper way, might just swap that 1/2" plywood to a PVC for longevity.

Thank you for all the help it is simple once you know where to look.

at least you got it out!

on that piece of wood...on mine, the front of the wood had the matching fake wood design of the trim because on the 45, you could just barely see the front of that piece of wood even with the trim piece in place. if that's how yours is, you might want to save it, and just re-cut it to fit your new microwave. mine was also adhered to the microwave i imagine to limit movement. just a thought...

good luck!

Thanks for the input! No this is just a plywood board with white veneer, can't remember if you can see it with the cabinet below on or not. I have spare 1/2" PVC board I am going to use with my new microwave. Nothing was glued surprisingly.

I was very upset at myself that I had to bash it out considering how simple and easy it should have been. Formula really does think of the end user and replacements when they build these boats though, making it easy to get too in some sort of fashion.
