41 PC bottom media blasted

Hi Guys,

I bought my 41 almost 2 years ago. She was yard maintained. In a saltwater environment this means a new coat of bottom paint every year which is a big mistake in my opinion. Anyway, the anti fouling paint was peeling off in chunks. I don't feel like dealing with breathing all that crap, sanding and chipping away at thick paint. I had the bottom media blasted and now I'm going to put on 4 coats of Interlux 2000 for blister protection, followed by Micron CSC ablative paint. here's some pics. of the cleaned bottom...

Those of you with under water exhaust pre-IPS.I replaced the stainless steel exhaust inspection plates with fiberglass plates to get rid of an electrolysis issue, you can see that in one of the pictures...

Boathound, what kind of electrolysis issue did you have and how did you discover it? Just curious.

Edice, not a big deal, just that the stainless inspection plates were getting eaten up around the edges. I decided to replace them with epoxy glass plate which is pretty much inert.

boathound, did you make the plates yourself or were they available somewhere? I'm wondering if it was a salt water problem because mine seem fine, but it would be nice to eliminate any potential source of future problems...........

George,

I made them myself out of fiberglass board that I bought at Jamestown Distributors. You need a fine tooth blade In a jigsaw to cut it.I think it's a saltwAter problem only...

Here's the "after" pictures. Four coats of Interlux 2000 epoxy and two coats of bottom paint. and a whole lot of rolling around under the boat!

Bottom looks great!!, I have a question I noticed in your pics you are using 5 blade props. did the boat always have these or did you switch from 4 to 5?? have you ever run the boat with 4 blade and how was the boat performance?? I have the 48 yacht and am considering going to a 5 blade but a little short of the 8,000 cost.

Hi Joe,

I've only owned this boat for one full season. The short answer is I like the 5 blade props. The long version is I believe they were fitted on the later diesel powered 41 PCs for a few reasons. I think the 4 blade props didn't have enough surface area to transmit the torque of the diesels and were prone to cavitation. The diameter is pretty restricted because of clearance to the tunnels so the challenge is to get enough blade area. Also because clearance is so tight the 5 blade design helps reduce the drumming of water pulses against the bottom of the hull because it runs at a higher effective frequency more pulses per rpm ie runs smoother than the 4 blade. Next reason for 5 blade is that the props are quite far aft and prone to ventilation in a following sea or blow out on hard turns.

With the 5 blade props this is one smooth running boat with great mid range response.

Hi Boathound,

thanks for the reply, I was considering going to the five blade wheels on the 48 but just a little short of the $8,000 to purchase them, about $8,000 short actually. I have some pretty big 4 blade 26 x 34 they work well but they are max in relation to the hull tunnel. thanks for the response. :)
