41pc with 8.2 gas...

I'm looking at a 41pc with the 8.2 EFI gasoline engines. The boat is very clean and offered at a great price. Is the 8.2 woefully inadequate for this boat? I know many came with diesels, but most of those vessels are selling for much more than the gas ones. Any opinions either way? ???

FORTUMATE SUN,
I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT THE 8.2 IS SUFFICIENT, BUT MANNMADE, (GEORGE) HAS ACTUAL EXPERIENCE. HE HAS TWO OF THEM IN HIS 41PC. HE SHOULD CHIME IN, BUT YOU CAN SEND HIM AN E MAIL IF YOU WOULD LIKE.

I have a 2005 40PC with Gas engines. It rides very nice - cruises at 20 knts, but fuel consumption is heavy.
That said, it would take a while to burn the difference in boat cost vs fuel consumtion. Not to mention the price of diesel today and the cost of diele mechanics vs gas.

If you need to have travel range you may be forced to go diesel. If not, gas is fine. it works for me since i normaly use the baot for day trips, weekend on it rarely.

Good Luck.

fortunate sun, where are you located, and which boat are you looking at? I got a 41PC last year with 8.1HO engines. I had been told the gas boat was slow, you need the diesels. Well, the boat has soooooooo many other positives I have been more than willing to give up the speed for the added comfort and conveniences. The beam makes it so liveable, it rides high and smooth and yes it burns a lot of fuel. If we get 70-80 hours it is a good season, this year it is looking like 50 will make me happy. As others will say, the difference in initial price pays for the added fuel burn. If you are putting on 200 hours a season go with diesels, if you are around 100 or less the gas will be fine. I can cruise now about 23mph @3500RPM's, topping out over 33MPH @4600RPM's. Depending on what you are looking to pay, the one's Troy has are top notch. There are a few older ones at really good prices, if you can I would suggest the 496's rather than the 502's but either engine is fine in this boat. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, or come on up, it will give me an excuse to go for a ride!

I'm located in the upper midwest and boat primarily on the St. Croix and upper Mississippi rivers. I am lucky if I get 100 hours a year. The boat is a '97 41PC freshwater boat with about 410hrs. I know the previous owner very well, so I know its been meticulously maintained and has extras like radar, KVH tracking satalite TV and flat screen TVs.

PT G, the performance numbers you post seem pretty good for a boat of this size. Why do you state the 496's are superior to the 502's? I'm not an expert on either one of those powerplants, so any info would be helpful. Is 3500 the "sweet spot" for the 496? The 502's stated HP is 375, how does that compare? I also remember you saying that you had your props tuned...did that make a difference in speed, hole shot, efficiency?

fs, not sure if 3500 is a "sweet spot" but it allows us to make time, enjoy the scenery and not shake stuff loose. Tuning the props (they added an inch of pitch) has given me more lift so the boat rides with a better attitude and cut my WOT rpm's down. I can now give it full throttle without the limiter kicking in. It hit 4600 on the tach's, but I don't like to run there for too long. I gained almost 2mph in mid-range, and it also turns and backs down better.

The 496's are rated 420HP and I would think the 5 year gain in technology yields better fuel efficiency, although at less than a mile per gallon efficiency is a head game. Given good maintenance you should expect 2000-2500 hours out of those engines, and it sounds like the owner has made it comfortable with new amenities over time. If you are in the 100K range, give or take 10K you probably have a good buy.

I didn't realize the HP difference between the 502's and the 496's was so great. I'm guessing that the 45hp per motor will make an impact in performance. One of my concerns with going to a 41 was giving up the speed, but the numbers you posted seemed ok. Thanks for the great info.

I would agree with the 496 verses the 502. We do not trade for 502's without compression tests, we have just been burnt too many times. They burn oil and have little low end power. I know that was what was available, but is also why Formula wouldn't put them in the 280 as a single and just mainly the 7.4. The 496 has great power all the way through the range and a much better running attitude. Not to mention they run faster in that type of boat. I have a 496 41 PC that is near perfect. I need to sell it and am not firm on the price what so ever. Please give me a call I will be happy to take care of you.

I'm looking to buy a 41PC with the 502 410 hp engines (low hours) and was thinking of pro charging them. Just enough to cruise in the 30's. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated

I just bought a gas 41PC last month. She topped out at 28 knots on the survey. I'm coming from a trawler so, she'll never see those speeds out of me. Interesting note on fuel economy though. At around 8-10 knots she gets the same fuel economy as my old 43' Hatteras with twin Detroits. I was pleasantly surprised because I thought the gassers would do much worse. If you do your own maintenance, take a good look at the starboard raw water impeller (if you can see it). It looks like a doozy to replace. I broke down and paid a mechanic. First boat that I haven't performed that task myself.

Is there a place in the forward bulkhead to put an access hatch? With my access hatch on the port side, on Cummins that is the bad one, the mechanic changed the impeller in about 10 minutes.

BTW, Matt, congratulations on your new Formula!
