48 yacht engine choice

Hello all. I currently own a 2002 41 PC. I am considering upgrading to a larger boat. I absolutely love my Formula. There is a 2004 48 yacht for sale. BUT it has 480 hp Volvo diesels which are the same as my 41 PC. I did my research and never saw this combo before. I'm concerned this boat is underpowered. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

I went to see this 48 and was wondering the same thing. Did you know they are v-drives. She is awesome but not in Bristol condition and previous owner was not that caring. Canvas is good, cockpit seats have all the center seams opening, engine room needs TLC, Generator Cover hold downs are all missing. The Broker owns it and is is detailing it and I may go back to see it after it has been detailed. Don't get me wrong She is a Good looking boat and priced accordingly - have not seen one in that price range anywhere but the 480's and the V-Drives are a turn - off for me. It is much bigger in person, that the pictures show. I docked next to her and my 41 looked like her dinghy. They upgraded the GPS to a 9 or 10inch, but there is a good stereo upgrade (Fusion) but that money should have went into Electronics. OBTW we needed a reason to go for a ride and it was worth it and were able to fuel up at $3.19 a gallon so a day on the boat with family and friends and cheap fuel, it doesn't get any better.

That's funny Botjem. The dealer is the same one who sold me my 41 which was in more than Bristol condition. Everything on my boat is
custom. This 48 Yacht only cruises at 20 knots and max at 25. That's no enough for me. I think the ride would be more like riding in a Lincoln
Town car vs. a sporty Lexus. My friend has a 460 Sundancer which is equal in weight and HP. My wife hates the ride of that boat, and loves
ours. The 41 cuts through the water like a knife. Maybe it would be different given the Formula hull vs. Searay but I wouldn't want to chance it.
The 48 Yacht deserves the 660 hp Cummins. That setup gives a 25 knot cruise and maxes out at 32-33 knots. That's what a formula should do!!
The dealer just called me and told me they just added 4,000 in cockpit carpets. Still a no go for me!!!! Good Luck.

you could look at the 45Y...cruise at 25-26k and burn 32gph. top out at ~31k. and the ride is great...nice and soft in most conditions, and can handle snotty with no real issues. the handling is awesome though...i love standing it on it's side to do a 180...

Or you could look at a 40PC (with pods), I cruise at 29 MPH burning 24 GPH with a top speed of 40 MPH - just felt like being silly as I know you want to go bigger, but I could not help it.

Thanks for the info guys! Gonna wait for one with a the 660 engines. The newer 45 yachts are kinda out of my reach price wise. I would love to have the newer ones with all glass enclosed cockpit. Beautiful boats but I'm also kind of Leary on the IPS drives. I have no experience with them nor do I have any in my marina. I've heard they are great but he older ones have maintenance issues. Is this true??

As for the IPS the older version A&B simply require a few upgrades to get them up to Snuff....

And then if you get a saltwater boat you might have one more thing you need to do related to the clamping ring on the pod.

But you can normally negotiate when you buy if those aren't already fixed to cover the cost to get those fixed.

my '08 has one newer pod, but that was replaced because i hit something huge...on my first day out no doubt. so, i have one pod that's 10 years old and has 1900 hours on it. outside of upgrading the clamping ring that toofast mentioned, it's factory...so they're not exactly fragile.

I had an 05 48 Yacht with 660 cummins diesels in it. That boat was fast and handle like a sports car on steroids. Lost it to Sandy. The 48 you mention does seem to be under powered

That's a shame that boat was lost. Sounds like it was a great boat. Glad you stayed with the Formula line!!
Hope your enjoying the 40 PC as much as the 48..

I was looking at these at one point. from everything I read you want the cummings motors. They only used that package for one year and figured out it was under powered. I forget the years but I think they changed the hull a little bit to fit the bigger engines.

Sorry about your boat and losing it to Sandy :(

What was the cruise speed with the 660's? I put an offer in on a 48 and it has the 660's just wondering the fuel burn, speed and rpms these engines like to be at. Will be running long distance (from Florida > Maryland). Thanks!

I have a very new to me 2004 47' w/ the Volvos, just made a 47 mile run 1 way, so nearly 100 miles total that I tracked the data on so I can have a comparison after this winters planned work of new 5 blade VeemStar props, new bottom paint that is desperately needed.

I was full fuel @ 400 gals, full of water @ 100 gals, MT waste tank, & 15 people on board with coolers loaded down with ice/drink.
Holiday weekend with heavy chop for 40 miles of the nearly 100 mile trip..... my buddy in the 37PC behind me had a smooth ride!..lol
2350 rpms
25.5 mph avg (24ish on the way there / 26ish on the way back)
22.2 gph fuel burn / engine.
