5 year maintence heat exchangers

We had our heat exchangers and CAC torn down and cleaned this spring. Found the biggest clogged area was between the engine cooler and oil cooler on the heat exchanger. This is an area that is not accessible by removing the end caps or hoses.

Did you have over heating issues or was this just preventative? Salt water cruising or fresh water? Were your intake filters cleaned regularly?
Would be interested in when I should pull my heat exchangers but my engine operating temperatures on a 2005 40 PC with Yanmars are okay for now.

I haven't cleaned out my heat exchangers yet either. Yanmars recommendation is 2000 hours. I have looked in the end caps and it looked good after 900 hours in salt water. If you run your boat at WOT for a few minutes watch your temp gauge. If it starts climbing alot it is a sign of clogged heat exchangers. it sounds like Our Place is in salt water.

I serviced the coolers on my Yanmars at 500 Hours. The radiator shop said there was some build up in the tubes but they didn't look too bad. One section that did look bad was the fins the air goes thru. It sucks in some oil from the crank case vent and it builds up in there. The radiator shop cleaned up the fins and I cleaned the housing with brake cleaner.

I had them cleaned on maintenance schedule. I am in salt water and had the original Volvo sea strainers that were after the raw water impeller. Had to clean out the exchanger ends at the hoses a few times. Switched to the new strainer 3 years ago that is before the impeller and have had less of a problem with sea grass.
