Bad Fuel Pump 2001 280 ss

I did a short cruise last weekend and anchored about an hour and a half up river. Anchored for a while. preparing to return starboard motor would crank but not fire. Came home on one motor. I had a mechanic check it out and he told me it was the high pressure fuel pump. He said due to the location of the pump he would have to pull the motor. Has anyone had success replacing pump without removing engine?

Being a 2001 and 280 SS figuring SBC and cool fuel Gen 2

Has anyone had success replacing pump without removing engine?

It can be done but is much easier pulling the motor. Assuming 2 person crew (hours below doubled)

Motor not pulled:
Remove drive 1 hr
Support motor from below or above so port side motor mount can be removed 2 hr
Remove/replace cool fuel module 3 hr
Re-install motor mount, align motor and install drive 2 hr
8 hr total

Motor pulled
Remove drive 1 hr
Pull motor 2 hr
Remove/replace cool fuel 1 hr
Install motor 2 hr
Align motor and install drive 1 hr
7 hr total

The motor pull is less time by 1 hr by my guess. I'm sure I will be low on the estimate, but tech's which do this all the time its actually easier. The sore spot will be what they charge to pull/reinstall motor. Pulling a motor is much easier to work on then one in a boat as most know.

starboard motor would crank but not fire.

Since this happened after sitting for some time, I wonder if it never started again. If it never started again, then could be the pump. If it started after cooling down later then maybe vapor lock

Check the fuel pump relay as well. Had one of mine go bad mid cruise recently, engine died, cranked but no start. new relay and all was well.

Are these very different than the 7.4L in an 330 SS, did one of mine this summer and was not too hard? Took about an hour start to finish.
