Battery Replacement + Post Cleaning

I'm about to replace my batteries for the first time. Does anyone have any idea what wrench sizes are needed to remove the battery posts?

After cleaning the battery posts, what do you put on them for corrosion protection?

Thanks!

Like many i use CRC Marine Battery Protection spray. A good dose every four or so months throughout the year seems to stop corrosion. No idea about wrench size. What battery are you installing?

So mine are 2 different sizes, for negative and positive.

Might be 14 and 15 MM, but I can't be sure. I would just bring a whole set or if you can't then an adjustable wrench.

I personally have never had an issue with corrosion on any of my boats and don't use anything for prevention. If your terminals are corroded you may want to get a good set of battery pliers as the nuts may not be an exact size anymore.

Should be either 1/2" or 9/16". I just installed a new battery for the generator in mine and I needed to use a 9/16"socket. For the other batteries on the boat I used a 1/2" socket.

Thanks for the info! House battery was 9/16, engines were 1/2. Terminal connectors were screw down. Tie-wrapped the positive post rubber protector to the cable for safety.

A friend said he puts a small amount of Vaseline on the posts after completing the connections.

I use spray paint on battery connections, grease and Vaseline seem to run in warm temps but paint seals the connection and keeps oxygen out so it cannot corrode. I coat top, sides, and make sure to spray sideways to get under the terminal.
It's a little more work when disassembling and cleanup is tougher, but the results are well worth it.
