Beaching 280SS

Hello all,

I have a 2000 280SS with twin B3. I frequent a swimming beach in a protected area where my kids love to jump off and swim for an hour or so. I generally tool around and shop for my next boat (plenty of 50 - 90 foot Vikings to look at :)). I have noticed other folks "beaching" their boats and hanging out. This includes some boats that (to me) look pretty big to be doing so, and they also have stern drives.

Family wants to do this too. If I put the drives up with the trailer trim, and then ease into the beach, can I let her "rest" on the bottom? There is no wave action here as we are well into an inland area where the water is still.

Appreciate the input....

Not a good idea . . . just because you see others do it.

Better to have your boat floating in 2+ feet of water - nose in and use both bow and stern anchors to hold it in place.

I?ve done it a few times over the years- same reasons. Knowing the risk upfront and my hull has some gel coat abrasions to prove it. At some point you make a cost benefit decision.
I would not recommend it if you?re fussy about your stuff.
Could be 99.9% soft powder sand except for that one sharp rock hiding.

I'm very particular when it comes to my toys and personally would never beach my boat. Aside from the rocks hiding out, the sand can be really abrasive and rough up your gelcoat. Also sand can get up into the water intakes much easier.. But to each their own!!

Beaching the a non-center console serves no real purpose in my opinion, short of a place where you're not allowed to throw an anchor for conservation reasons. Backing in with a good front anchor length, and throwing a rear anchor or sandbar pole is way better. Get as shallow as you feel comfortable with, know your tide and currents and it's the best of both worlds.

Remember you don't just have to worry about the tide dropping, you have to make sure you can always swim back to the boat when the tide rises. I anchor in spots where there is a ripping current sometimes on tide changes, and if you can't stand getting back to the boat would be a chore.

PS. I did it all the time with my 330ss.... I don't do it with the 34pc, it's just to big to deal with by hand close in like that.
