Bypassing outdrives with thru hulls and sea strainers

Have an 07 31pc with 496mags and bravo threes. Have had recent overheating/sea water pressure issues. Replaced both raw water pumps due to scoring inside pumps. Inspected heat exchangers, hoses, drive intakes, etc. Pretty sure there is marine growth in the small hoses that go through transom. Have decided to bypass legs and install new intakes, thru hulls, seacocks, and strainers. Wondering if anyone else has done this? Any issues? Mostly concerned about placement of thru hulls and clean water intake due to top speed of forty knots. Any help is appreciated.

I have the same boat but with 5.7 (320 HP) Volvo's. I put thru-hull fittings/strainers in after my first 3 seasons of overheating almost every time that I took the boat out. Have not had a problem since.

FYI, I used low-profile strainers manufactured by Buck Algonquin (ordered through Deep Blue Yacht Supply @ www.deepwateryachtsupply.com). The cost of the strainers/fittings totaled $739.98 back in 2009 and it cost $200.00 per engine to have them installed.

The Part Number of the Strainers was 00IWS150 (IWS-150 INTAKE WATER STRAINER)

Best $$$$ that I have spent to date.....

Ok, same boat and I am confused...are you saying that drilling holes in the hull, installing the strainers, rerouting the intake hoses, shutting off the old intake and making sure it does not leak only cost $400 total to install ?

Yes sir. It only took 4-hours.....

Not sure of the Merc set-up but I wouldn't think that it should take much longer IMHO

My gut says the MERC install will be 3-4x that amount. :'(

Good morning,
Yes, that's a pretty popular modification around the Great South Bay on the South shore of Long Island due to the large amount of floating eel grass and shallow silty/muddy water.
So popular in fact that they are called "south bay sea strainers". Google them.
My friend has added them to his 31PC w/ 496s and solved his overheating problems due to sucking up silt/mud in his shallow canal. He has hull strainers on the bottom of hull and raw water inline strainers bolted to the stringers.
I have a 31PC w/ 6.2s and have been lucky so far but will install them if I find the need too.
Good luck.

our '04 31pc has Gil strainers, I believe from the factory. They do not bypass the water intake on the drives but rather are an additional intake. I heard it's a good idea to keep the drive intake when installing thru hull pickups as the water flowing through the drives keeps the drive lube temps down.

Installing the blockoff plates on the transom shields would be a lot of labor as they're pretty burried back there.
