Cleaning

Just thought I would post a photo of how well my boat reflects after I have washed, polished, and then waxed my Imron paint. I spent from 5:45 am this morning (due to early am airport run to drop my son off at the airport) till 5 pm. It's pretty involved as it entails climbing on my hardtop, etc. I do it by hand since I don't want to drop a buffer in the water. When I get home I take 2 Aleve for the pain as I am getting older. But the boat looks sharp!

Top job. Very satisfying to see your pride and joy this clean. There is nothing like Imron to make a boat shine when properly waxed.

FYI - In 2002 they started using base coat clear coat, not Imron.

Not necessarily, here is a reply from TAG. Yes, Imron WITH Clear. BTW 2003 37 PC

Good Morning, Dave,

I have looked into the paint on your boat more. The paint was both Imron and base coat clear coat. The champagne color was a base coat clear coat and the gold and titanium are both an Imron single stage paint. Therefore, your boat does have both on it... The only color that should have clear coat on it would be the champagne color. The gold and titanium should not have clear coat on them due to its Imron paint. These are the colors issued to your boat and how they were painted here at the factory. If you have any other, questions please let me know.

Thanks,

I've been pretty happy with Chemical Guys boat products.

So far I have used:

* Butter Wet Wax - easy to apply and remove; lasts a good 4-5 months; significantly reduces the black streaks below canvas snaps
* Heavy Duty Water Spot Remover Gel - this keeps the stainless windshield and stainless rails around the boat reflective as a mirror, and super easy to use
* Boat Vinyl & Rubber Protectant - there's a lot of "oil" in this which helps it last on upholstery for a few weeks, but it also doesn't feel "greasy" when applied
* Revive Polish - I do this in the off-season to bring out the shine, then finish off with the Butter Wax

The other cool things about Chemical Guys: (1) their products are safe for the environment (many are these days, but there some harmful ones) and (2) the price point is very reasonable. (I've bought the $60-$70/bottle waxes before and they didn't offer the magic I was hoping for.)

Can I ask what your fave products are when you do it by hand?

3M products all the way! However for stainless steel I Collinite 850 Liquid Metal Wax. Great on the fridge doors.

If available in the US, and I get these in the UK, Bilt Hamber make some wonderful products. Very geeky but oh so easy to use with epic results.

So, I have a question----who's got a great glass cleaner? My cockpit cover goes over my glass. Normally when I am cleaning my glass I am doing in bright sunlight---and that's an issue. I have some smudges from the cover and I just want super clear glass when I am out with guests. I remember years ago when my dad had an Cessna 172 he had some glass cleaner that was like a liquid wax. You squeezed it on, it powder dried, and then you wiped it off. It made the glass like Rainex if you had any rain. Well, my dad passed years ago and wish I could ask him now what he used back then. Somebody have a product for glass that they really like?

I struggle with a hot windshield and desiring clear glass, too.

Honestly, I've tried a lot of glass cleaners, but my favorite is still rinsing the glass with hose, getting a bucket with boat-soapy water (it's a grease cutter), wash with a soft brush or sponge, rinse with a hose, dry the bulk of the water with an absorber, and then finish with a terrycloth towel. I'm convinced there's no chemical that won't streak on hot glass, and when you use soap and water, it significantly cools the surface.

If I don't feel like getting all of the equipment out to do a thorough window washing, I use Chemical Guys Optical Glass Clean on a more-than-damp terry cloth towel (the water helps dilute and spread the cleaner around a bit), and then I wipe up the reside with a dry terry cloth towel.

Two best glass cleaners in the business and one is a quick detailer. Clearkote QD is quite simply amazing. So many uses but on glass is epic. My second choice is Nextzett (used to be called 1Z). Their glass cleaner is very good indeed and only $10 a bottle. Works well on warm glass and comes off streak free. A very close third is Wurth Glass Cleaner, as used by most Le Mans 24 hr racecar teams, foams beautifully and has many uses beyond cleaning glass. Available from Autogeek for around $10.
