Cockpit flooring options

Formula Tenn

This COULD be the year we try to install a floor covering for the cockpit. I'm wondering what people have done/would do/would do differently in regards to exterior flooring. I want something that is either stain resistant/proof, WON'T hold water, feels good underfoot, will not get hot in direct summer sunlight, does not have the black backing that makes a mess or comes off, and preferably doesn't have to be glued down. I've looked at SeaDek and some of the installations I've seen (on this forum included) look pretty awesome but I'm concerned that due to the texture of our flooring surfaces it will be really hard or impossible for that stuff to adhere properly. I have no interest in any type of carpet. Basically I need the perfect floor covering that doesn't cost a fortune. Wondering if members would share their preferred products and experiences or if there is a product out there that you are considering. The Seadek foamy type stuff seems top be the way to go, is there a similar product that does not install permanently? Anybody heard of "Seagrass"?

Thanks!

boat.jpgI used a waterproof vinyl flooring from Home Depot. I’m not quite finished yet, but I’m happy with the way it is turning out. Not bad for a 33 year old bird.

I upgraded an older boat with the Aquaweave with the AquaLoc backing which I think would be considered seagrass?. Its what Formula uses in new boats. The rubber ribs hold it well to the deck without snaps. I think if you had multiple pieces it might not be as good as one big piece though. You can also still install with snaps or velcro tabs they have.

stain resistant/proof - Within reason I don't see how it would stain. Better than carpet.
WON'T hold water - Water would bead on surface then disappear after standing wet on it from lake, likely soaking up into backing a bit or passing thru.
feels good underfoot - I think it did, relatively soft
will not get hot in direct summer sunlight - OK MAYBE DOWNSIDE, warmer than traditional carpet I thought but less than synthetic teak
does not have the black backing that makes a mess or comes off - No issue but think this is more as it gets older
Cost = Fortune? I thought it was reasonable, made my own template and shipped direct to me.

Okay the Aquaweave is a product I have heard mentioned before. So far, the SeaDek is the only thing I have personally experienced that doesn't get hot in direct sunlight on a 95 degree day. I have not personally seem any of the stuff you are talking about. Any of you Florida peeps got anything you are using that you'd recommend?

I have had multiple cockpit/platform flooring systems and have not found one that checks all your boxes. They all seem to get hot, although I have not used SeaDek and Formula Tenn said it does not. They also all seem to have the ability to stain or capture dirt.

For me, the best experience that I have had was with the factory sea grass weave. Super easy to clean. Pull it out if you have to give it a little extra attention. Looks great. It can get hot in direct sun light, but not like my floor. Gotta be a lot less $$ than other options. Plenty of aftermarket versions that can be found.

I have full cockpit flooring on my current Formula and I regret everyday that I did not choose the sea grass.

My search continues. Getting hot in direct sunlight is just not gonna work for us. I may try to get a sample of the seagrass stuff and see how that works, warm is acceptable but so hot that you have to wear shoes or constantly douse with water is no good for us.

Tenn,
I had SeaDek installed on my Sea Ray, the colors I chose did not get hot, even in the Arizona sun but it was hard to keep "looking clean." I've decided to put new carpet in the Formula with SeaDek possibly on the swim platform in the future. Here's a few pics of the SeaDek on my Sea Ray.

Yeah that looks really nice. I like the Seadek since it feels really good underfoot and doesn't get hot but I really doen't think it will adhere properly to my textured floors. I wish they could make it removable with a backing.

I have installed an aftermarket mat set on mine with metal poppers. The backing doesn't rot away, the carpet dos not get dirty as the OEM one did and it doesn't get hot here in Florida. My swim platform has PlasDec which does get hot, but a quick splash and it soon cools down. My cockpit carpet was installed by a local guy here in FL but I am sure can be purchased from a manufacturer. Wonderful stuff.

I just had Seadek (camel over beach) installed and it is not supposed to get hot. I wanted to go darker, but was strongly encouraged by the installer to go lighter.

Do you know the brand name of the carpet?

Found this at an open house past weekend, have not seen this option before but seemed like a nice alternative for those who want seadeck but do not want to glue down. Would be easier to take out and deep clean on occasion and repairs if stained or damaged would be simplified.

Exactly no, but I would say it is seadek, the feel and look was exactly the same as mine on. They had the glue on installed on the transom walk through and swim platform but snap-in in cockpit. This was on a Sea Ray bow rider.

That looks nice. What is the disadvantage of the glue down? Removal once it wears out?
