Dinette Back Cabin Cushions

Hello All,

I have read all over the forum and have not been able to find out how to remove the back dinette cushions. I have a 1988 26 PC but think it is the same for the 29 PC and maybe others. Any help would be appreciated!!

Well I called Formula tech line and was very hopeful and then disappointed. When I called they said that the person is still working for them that did those cushions and they would check and get back to me. I also asked about a picture of the folding step or the platform that you step on in the engine room as mine is missing. They don't have a picture which is probably understandable. What disappointed me is they "think" that there are some brackets on the port side that have screws. This is certainly possible but in my original discussion we talked about that and I made it very clear that the part that people put your back on is very secure with no wiggle at all. I know that not everyone can have all the answers but how many of there boats had the same set up and for how many years. I think the 29 PC and the 31 PC did. I have called Formula twice now and they are zero for two with me. I appreciate the attempt but I hope no one is calling the vintage tech support asking where are the spark plugs? Sorry for the rant but it is hard for me to believe that they would not keep build information on boats. Someone drew up plans. I picture drawings of page after page with schematics of every screw, nut and bolt. I suspect there are screws under the port side and I suspect that the molding behind each bench seat will have to come off and then screw heads will be visible. I have looked at the molding a little and not sure how that comes of but I wonder if it is glued on. If I get if off I will let everyone know as others on this forum have asked the same question. Winter is fast approaching so I am not sure if it will happen in 2018.

I got another email a few hours ago and they said they have another person to check with who is on vacation so I have moved the needle back to hopeful.

Dont worry, they will take care of you....I have had great luck with TAG so far.

TAG is great but I have found (and understandably IMO), because the boat show season and then holidays, this time of year they can be lass responsive then they normally are.

I did hear back and they thought there was a U shaped opening under the back rest for access to a couple of screws. I didn't think so as I was fairly sure that I had looked. There was not a U shaped opening or any access from the bottom that I can see. I think that they are screwed in from the back and then that molding is put on to hid the screws. I also don't see anyway to take the molding off and am guessing they are glued. I went on line and looked at other 26 PC's and also 29 PC's and around those years they all looked the same. I did respond back so I will see what they say. I don't know how many of the 26's and 29's were made but I sure hope someone remembers. If not I guess I go with my gut and take one of those moldings off and hope I don't ruin anything.

Heard back again with some more information. Part of what they talked about was something about screws by the AC/DC door. I was glad they said that as they must have been thinking about a different boat as the 26 PC's in my vintage doesn't have a door covering the AC/DC panel. I sent them a bunch of pictures from the internet of the dinette. TAG does seem very nice and I understand it must be hard to remember every boat.

Just in case anyone is following this thread TAG has gone silent. If I hear back I will post otherwise I guess this won't be a winter project. I will look at again in the spring as it is to easy to break things trying to get apart in the winter.

I have a 1988 29Pc and have been wondering the same thing how to remove those back cushions from the dinette. Have you had any success? I also have the steps inside the engine area if you want me to send pix. All they are is a piece of plywood, with anti slip on them, with a piano hinge.

I have not had any success but talked to a boat upholsterer and he said he could figure it out. Have not taken the boat to him but might next spring. I am sooo disappointed with TAG. 26 PC, 29 PC and I think the 31 PC had the same set up for years. Back in the late 80's I had a 25 PC and a buddy had the 26 PC. He then moved up to a 29 PC and that is a great boat. Would love a picture if it isn't to much trouble. I kind of remember the step and it seems like I remember a metal cover over the plywood edges. If I figure it out I will definitely let everyone know.

The step is just a marine piece of plywood with aluminum edge banding shaped like the letter L on a piano hinge. On top was a sheet of non skid vinyl like material. on the bottom they had two pieces of a 2 x 3 where it met the stringers.

Thank you!! Will have to make me one. On my 25 PC I put a couple eye hooks in the bulk head and carried my lawn chairs strapped in. Easy to get out for enjoying an adult beverage or to do work in the engine compartment.

You're welcome. I was looking at the seat cushions again. The one toward the back of the boat next to the opening acrylic hatch is pretty straight forward a bunch of screws that hold it in and one inthe corner near the hull. The other side i can't figure out looks like it is wrapped and the screws are under the vinyl trim. If I can't figure it out I guess at some point I will just cut the screws off.

I suspected that but I have trim on that side also. So to state it a different way I have a trim piece by the v-berth and also by the companionway acrylic door too. I wonder if they glued on that piece. I was going to try and carefully pry one off. Great to know that there are screws under them.
