Drive Showers

So, I have been traveling alot this spring which has led to me having little time to work on boat. I asked the marina to paint my outdrives with anti-fouling paint - the kind that comes in the rattle can. Here is the problem/question. The marina painted the drive showers, which have never been painted before. Is this a problem? Advice please.

Yeah, should be ok...doesn't look as cool, but hey no major issues as long what Castine said...holes are clear!

Since they are a no drill option, Merc won't void your warranty, especially if u have SEACORE engines. And like TooFast stated, they come standard from the factory.

OK I give up.
What are drive showers for ??
I'm guessing it has something to do with the anti-fouling issue for wet kept boats.
However... After clicking on Toofast's link, I think it may have cooling characteristics.
I'm on a lift in Fl. and haven't seen then on anyones drives.

It is for cooling the "oil" in the outdrive. The oil is the outdrive to protect and lubricate. Bravo III's get SUPER HOT - and drive showers are MOST important if you have a Bravo III or if you have a super fast boat with a bravo 1 or 2. Bravo III's run SO HOT because the big set of gears is up on the top end of the drive. When you are under way, that part of the drive is 100% out of the water and the spinning gears and gearcase gets very hot.

The drive showers pick up the water and redirect it to the top of the drives while under way, thus keeping things cool.

Nothing is going to break tomorrow if you don't have them, just long term insurance...but great cheap insurance for sure.

Found some specs on drive temps - without showers.

Drives listed in order by operating temperatures:

(hottest)
Bravo III (270+ degrees)
Alpha (all) 265+ degrees
Bravo II
Bravo HP, XR and ZR Drives (due to their performance applications)
Bravo I
(coolest)

Thanks for the info. I revisited the link you posted. Looks like a simple solution for what Could turn into a Not so simple situation.
When you concider the temperature data You would think Mercruiser would have engineered a similar system to handle the high temps.
without having to deal with aftermarket products. Go Figure
I will surely be concidering it especialy when you think of the temprature of the water we boat in.

Well for Merc I think it is cheaper to leave the shower out...plus they gotta get their parts business happy ;)

That's why on the Bravo IIIx drives you see what looks like a "heat sink" for the top cap on the drive. Drive fluid is cheap and it's still amazing that on other forums the number of people that don't change their gear lube out every season...
