Emron repair ??

When I got my boat the hull was in close to mint condition accept for 1 scratch. I would almost call it a scuff. I thought I could compound it out, but I couldn't. (That's when it became a scratch)
Anyway it's like a foot long and just below the gunnel on the starboard side. Right where I board the boat. Others may barley notice it, but for me it's like a punch in the face every time I board .
Who? and How? do they fix that?
Do they fill the scratch and feather in the paint?
Do they sand the scratch smooth and feather in the paint?
Do they repaint the whole side?
Do they live with it and accept the constant Punch in the Face?????

Unfortunately I have had a similar mishap. To repair the Imron Paint is a very, very costly repair. Ultimately you will need to repaint the entire side of the boat at a cost of what I was quoted for my 31 PC was $2,200. That said, I was informed by numerous paint professionals that it should be done in a controlled / garaged area and requires an expert if you were to try to feather it out. Yes, the scratch would be filled similar to an automobile however the painting process it approx 5-6 different steps.

My scratches (11 of them over an 18" area) are on my port side, above the rub rail in my Silver Diamond Pearl paint (caused by 2 fenders blowing out during a raft-up when a 50' Ocean went by putting out a wake of approx 5'). To be frank, spending $2,200 is nuts. I have been looking for a decal that I could put on both sides of the boat that is approx 5" x 18" long that would look "factory" saving me approx 2K.

Please let me know what you decide to do.....

When you say they would have to paint the whole side of the boat, I'm confused ???
Wouldn't they only have to deal with the paint ABOVE the rub rail ?
Above the rail on my SS the Emron is like 6" wide midship then narrows toward the bow.
Are they talking 2K for just THAT ???
I don't care if it's a 10 part process. For 2K I want my house painted as well.

You are correct. above the rub-rail would be the entire port stern section (approx 2 1/2 feet high) going forward that tapers down to nothing. And yes, the 2K was to just paint that. God only knows how much painting the entire side of the boat would be from the rub-rail down.

I was told by 3 different marine paint shops that with the metallic flake in the paint compounded by the method of applying the Imron paint that tapering the paint job wouldn't be an option.

If you would like send me your personal e-mail address and I will send you the paint makeup/details provided to me by Formula.....

With all due respect...I disagree with those that feel a 'scuff' or 'scratch' is all doom and gloom. There are several of us dark hull Formulas that have our Formula dealership repair our mishaps to the point that you can't tell. While any quality paint work is an art and not inexpensive ...it never came close to the figures mentioned. Perhaps we're simply blessed to have a dealer that cares about their customers enough to treat us more as family vs. a blank ck.

God bless you for having a Formula dealer close enough to provide service to you.

Unfortunately I am in New Jersey and the closest Formula dealer is in Hicksville, Long Island which is 5.5 hours by boat one way.

That said, the "local" Formula "certified" repair facility (Comstock's located in Brick, NJ) is the one that quoted me the 2K. Please, please let me know if you have any suggestions as to how I can get the 11 significant nick's (down to the white primer) in my Imron paint repaired. Gosh knows not only do I want to make the required repairs but I certainly don't want to spend 2K.

Thanks for any suggestions.....

I feel your Pain :'( Things like this make me nuts as well.
I'm in Fla. and also some 150mi from the nearest dealer.
By the way, I used to live on the water on the south shore of Long Island, and I can tell you Hicksville isn't even close to water, north or south. Are you sure it was Hicksville?
I haven't had anyone look at my boat yet to get an estimate. Above my rub rail the Emron is at the most 7-8" wide at the widest and tapers to nothing just forward of the windshield. I can't believe the PC has 2 1/2' of paint above the rail.
Maybe my job will be more forgiving to the wallet.

Sorry the closest Formula Dealer is in:

351 S Main St
Freeport, NY 11520
516 378-8700 ph.

And yes, unfortunately above the rub-rail in a 2007 31 PC goes from nothing up forward to approx 2-1/2' back aft. So allot of prep/paint involved.

I'm still hoping that I can find someone to make me a couple of peel-and-stick emblems approx 5" x 20" that will cover the scratches. I already have the Formula Thunderbird Logo + FORMULA on the rear quarter panel so I was thinking of removing the very small 31 PC Chrome emblems from the Arch and have the "new" emblems rectangle with rounded edges, white backround, silver letters (to match the silver diamond pearl hull) with a black 1/4" line around it. Maybe I'm being to hopefull but this project is on the top of my 2011 New Years resolution. Like you, each and every time I am mid-ship on the port side of my boat all that I see are the nicks in the Imron Paint.....

I can't quite invision your situation. If I were you, I would think of popsting a picture.
You may get alternative suggestions that hadn't occurred to you.
Just a thought.

Yep, I agree.

Had a BAD scratch from a friends anchor during a raft up mistake.

Local (no forumula) paint guy was able to do it, you can't tell (well if you look very very very very close at the right angle maybe)

Only a few hundred bucks...but my scratch was pretty small. I would keep trying other shops, try some automotive guys...they are pretty familiar with Imron as well.

Good idea, I will post a picture in the spring when the Shrink-wrap comes off.

In the interim, picture 11 nicks (approx 5-6" apart) over a length of 18". They were caused by the screws from 340 Sea Ray that I was rafted up against when 2 bumpers blew due to a very inconsiderate boater that went by our 8 boat raft up putting out a 5' wake. Unfortunately, my Imron paint lost the battle. Since it took a while for the boats to stop rocking that is why the scratches's are so close/deep. Picture the following over an 18" length:

The scratches are actually gauges down to what appears to be white primer. It seems that it would be fairly easy to fill in and feather out with the correct fiberglass body filler. The challenge is finding a local paint shop that A. can do the work professionally and B. not require a mortgage application to be filled out to pay for it ;)

If you can feel the scratch, the white MIGHT be the fiberglass vs. the Primer...but either way this stinks.

On my 36 PC with the three color "bootstripe" stripe, some moron backed into me and punched a hole in the side of the boat (long story). Point being that my local marina paint shop was able to match all three colors in a localized repair of the Imron. Wasn't 100% color match, but I'd rate it at 95% anyway. They only sprayed a 2' section of the waterline stripe, not the whole thing. I think at the time it was about a $4K repair including fixing the hole in the side of the boat and repairing the gel coat. Not the end of the world if you scratch the Imron stripe...

I had a similiar scratch on my back starboard side in the dark blue section, and you are right most paint guys didn't want to touch it as a repair only. After looking High and Low I found a RV garage that blended it in and it came out GREAT I know the blend line is there but no one more then a foot away could ever pick it out. The RV garage had a huge paint booth to fit my boat in, they had it down in 2 days and the Best part is was $350. Just another suggestion where to check in getting your boat scraches fixed

Unforgettable... that's what you get for parking next to searays. lol. Anyways my Dad and I repainted my 26pc with imron in our trans shop one week. It was a serious job and I do not have metallic paint. Good luck finding someone you could really trust, and if you are anything like me that "patch" to hide the boo boo would haunt me as much as the scratch itself. Post some pics though, you never know what people can come up with.

Here is a pic of us applying the blue imron.

Did you paint the whole boat or ??

How many hours of prep work went into the job ?

Every line was repainted on the boat.. Gray, Black and Blue. There were alot of hours of fine-lining, protecting, sanding etc etc. I didn't keep count but it was all worth it in the end making a 22 yr old boat look fresh.

As far as the fella saying it is a high quote, Imron is a two piece pant that is very similar to an epoxy. You really need to know what you are doing and be safe with it because its highly toxic. With all that being said it all adds up. What is a real bummer is no metallic finishes even on regular auto body repairs come exact no matter how good the person is. Just nature of the beast.
