End of an era for sterndrive engines

Apparently both Mercruicser and Volvo have dropped the 5.0l and 5.7l from their lineup for 2016.

Volvo will be using the GM L83 5.3l VVT DI Engine as a replacement
One model with 300 HP and another with 350 hp

Merc will be using a newly designed 6.2l (non GM engine)
Also a 300 hp and 350 hp version

Both merc and volvo have new V6's too. (old news)
The Merc is a 4.5l merc design
the volvo is a GM LV1 4.3l VVT DI

There was an article a few months back in boating or boatus magazine about the changes coming to the sterndrives lineup. I remember reading that Merc was moving on from the GM blocks and building their own.

Yes, and Merc and Volvo are taking different tracks, with Merc going for a 'purpose designed' engine and Volvo stay with GM blocks. I wonder how it will all shake out as to the better course of action?

I think it's great that customers will get truly different and unique options in the same power ranges. Hopefully some head to head tests are done soon.

While the 6.2 is only used by Merc, I wouldn't say it is a real "new" design. Take a new 5.7 and install a 400 crank you wind up with 6.2L or 378 Cu in (A stroker engine). If the engine is later bored to .030 over you wind up with a 6.4 or 383 stroker

My understanding is Merc's new 6.2l is not a reworked GM 5.7. Its an all new engine by Mercruiser.

That's Merc Hype, I'm not saying that they didn't add some stuff to it but the 6.2 is a 5.7 GM block, just like it has always been. The change is adding a 400 crank, so it has a longer stroke. They designed a new intake and spark/emission control system and put some catalytic converter manifolds on it.

Mercury designed and builds the 6.2L engine specifically for marine use rather than adapting and marinizing an automotive engine. The 6.2L is not burdened with automotive restrictions and unnecessary technologies that result in additional cost and complexity without adding value.

The automotive restrictions have never been on a marine engine, but is sounds good. The exhaust is now which they don't seem to put that out there. GM has always had two lines, auto and marine, but the marine side is very small. Marinize a truck long block gets you brass freeze plugs and stainless steel head gaskets.

Not saying it's a bad thing, just that it's not as new a design as they try to push. A stroked out 5.7 in the beginning is a good thing

My guess would be the same foundry which continues to make the 502 for Merc once GM stopped using it

I wish I had LS based direct injected engines. Smoother, quieter, more powerful, more efficient. Its long overdue.
