Fluctuating voltmeter and EDC issues

I took a 50 mile trip this weekend and on the way I watched my starboard voltmeter start fluctuating but not low it was going higher than usual and dipping back to normal. When I reached my destination I shifted to neutral and then back into forward. The EDC started flashing and there was no shifting. I had no time to check the diagnosis button as I was in a marina. I turned the engine off and back on again and shifted perfectly. Is my alternator going bad? Can voltage issues cause EDC shifting issues? Thanks for the responses.

Check the wiring to the gauges first. I had an issue with the water temp gauges on my 40PC and cleaned the contacts on the back of the gauge and they have worked perfectly ever since.

On certain models there are mechanical shift actuators that are electrically drivin. These are electric motors with worm drives to pull and push shift cables to and fro. These get stiff and sometimes draw way more amps than the system will tolerate...thereby throwing a no shift code. Simply spray some lube around and into the actuator. This usually frees them up and the problem goes away.......

These are electronically actuated. it’s just weird that that engines voltmeter was fluctuating before the incident. Funny part is on the way home no issues at all.

you can check the voltage at the alternator and or battery to see if it's varying. Incorrect voltage can certainly fry expensive electronics...
