For Volvo crank mounted raw water pumps

Andrew,
The Merc. impellers are a bear to change. The Volvo setup is mounted on the crankshaft right in front of the engine and takes less than 10 minutes to change.

I know, but if I read the OP correctly he has a conversion from the Volvo crank driven raw water pump to the Bravo style pump which I assume are all belt driven. If I read that correctly, I was wondering why anyone would want to do that given how much more difficult the Bravo style pump impellers are to change compared to the Volvo crank driven impeller.

We not put the frequently touched pump on TOP of the engine, and the power steering pump, which is not often touched... near the bottom? Design fail?

The raw water pump is more efficient below the water line. If you move it to the top of the engine, the pump would sit above the water, thus there would be no head pressure on the suction side of the pump, reducing the capacity.
