Formula Blister Problems??

I'm going to be keeping a 2005 280ss in the water next year and looking for some advice. This boat has always been trailered or lift kept. Should I barrier coat the bottom or not worry about it? Freshwater New York lake. I have not heard many issues with Formula's getting blisters.........

Well the gel coat is the best, HOWEVER if you are keeping in the water, I WOULD FOR SURE Barrier Coat the bottom! Cheap insurance...for sure!

I kept my 2006 260ss in lake George NY for 6 seasons with no barrier coat or bottom paint with no issues. I have had my regal now for 3 seasons, no barrier coat, no issues. Nobody bottom paints on lake George unless it was already bottom painted when they boat the boat.

If a boat has been slipped in fresh wather for 6 or 7 seasons, is there a way to check for blisters by a surveyer before buying the boat. Are they easy to see on land? What does the factory recommend ?

Blisters should be visible to the eye if the boat has been recently taken out of the water. certainly a marine surveyor will check for and document any that are found.

I had a 242SS that was kept seasonally in salt water for 20 years and no blisters. I have seen a 1999 280SS that was kept seasonally in fresh water and had a substantial rash of blisters. My 330SS had been kept in fresh water seasonally for 16 years and had a few blisters just starting to form.

So, it is really hit or miss on whether blisters will form or not. I would do a barrier coat (in white) if keeping the boat in fresh water.

Is there a good Barrier coat that is White? Everything that I see is Black, Blue or Bronze. I am looking to keep my boat in freshwater seasonally.

Interlux E2000 comes in white. The colors you listed are typical for anti-fouling paint, not barrier coat.

For an anti-fouling coat, you can get ePaint EP2000 in white, which is actually a brighter white than the barrier coat.

Here is a picture of my boat with the Interlux and the ePaint EP2000 . . . can't you tell?

Bought a 2004 400ss in the fall. The boat was never bottom painted, it was rack stored most of its life but did spend a couple years in the water on Lake Michigan. There are no blisters on the boat

I want to bottom paint it as a lift and or rack storing is not an option. I talked with the Petit Paint Techinical sales rep at the boat show. I told him I wanted to do the Vivid white paint with the epoxy barrier coat. He told me there is no need for the barrier coat as the Formula's use Vinyl Ester resin and it is impervious to moisture. Use BioBlue to clean the hull then sand with 80 grit paper wipe it down again. And put 2 coats of Vivid white on and I'm done

Any thoughts or real world experience ?

Thanks
Mark

I agree, we have one of the best gel coats, etc...but I would personally still do the epoxy barrier coat. Relatively cheap insurance...

My 99 280ss was slipped in fresh water on Oneida Lake in NY prior to my ownership, you could never tell the boat was in the water for 4 summers when I purchased last spring.

I was shocked to find no blisters / or blemishes for the age of the boat.

Talked to the Petit rep at the Miami boat show he recommended the barrier coat. I think I'll do the barrier coat as I plan on keeping the boat for awhile

Ted - I had my 330 SS painted with white Trilux 33 in white and lasted 3 seasons. But I have heard that VC17M Extra om dark blue is good. Heard of it? Regards, GAry
