Fresh water filter and screen

I bought a used 2004 40 PC this year - good boat and I am still trying to find out where Formula has installed the fresh water filter. I am told it is behind the refrigerator and cleaning it out requires pulling out the refrigerator. Really dumb of Formula to put this filter at this location. I cannot get to it from under the sink or by removing the wastebasket. Any tips on how to move the refrigerator would be appreciated. I see screws in the front but the screw heads are not in line with the round access holes on the mounting panel. The unit is a side by side Nova Cool freezer and refrigerator.

Do you mean fresh water pump? the fridge should unscrew and slide out.

There is a small screen in the pump..assume that is what you are trying to get at?

That's exactly what I want to get at. The problem is the fridge unit - cannot access the screws with a standard Philips screwdriver - the fridge may have shifted a bit. will post photos soon.

The small in-line screen filter on my 34PC is not behind the fridge but instead under the sink and easily accessible. I check it all the time. The pump is behind the fridge. It does not make sense to me that the in-line screen filter for the 40PC is behind the fridge.

My previous boat, s Sea ray, had a filter/screen at the fresh water pump. Does Formula has the same arrangement? I do not see a filter/screen at the fresh water inlet at the transom or in the engine compartment.

As said before the screen is on the pump. The pump is behind the refrigerator. My screw holes do not line up exactly but you should be able to access them.

The pump and screen are under the sink on my 02 40pc. It's on the left side and is easy to get to, the screen is in a clear plastic bowl that is screwed to the pump. I'm glad it's not behind the fridge, I have had to clean it several times this season.

I had a problem with a clogged water pump strainer in a 2005 34PC. It is indeed behind the refrigerator in the galley. Maybe Formula realized it was inconvenient and moved under the sink in later models. The refrigerator wasn't hard to remove. First the wood veneer door is removed followed by the black wood on both sides. These were all easily removed with a philips head screwdriver. This exposed 6 more screws holding in the refrigerator which were also easily removed. The only trick is pulling out the refrigerator and not getting dirt on the carpet. I needed to shampoo after I finished. Good Luck.

Thanks a bunch for the tips. Now I have to get my better half to remove all the food. Will take a few weeks.

I have a 2005 37PC. Yes, you have to access the pump to clean out the filter on the inlet side of the pump. Unfortunately, you do have to remove the refrigerator to get to the pump. The way I removed my refrigerator was to remove the outer cabinet door. To remove the outer cabinet door you need to take off the lever that some installations have that attaches the outer cabinet door to the refrigerator. On the hinge side of the cabinet door there is a there is a piece of wood painted black mounted vertically toward the aft of the boat that is screwed into the forward wall of the head. (it will become obvious when you start to look at it) Remove the screws for that piece of wood with the hinges attached and the outer door will be able to be removed. You may have to work it out a little bit by pushing the carpet down as you pull the bottom of the wood out. Once you have that done you should be able to get to all the mounting screws that hold the refrigerator in. Once you remove those screws (maybe 6 or 8) you will be able to pull the refrigerator out. I would suggest putting a big towel or blanket under the refrigerator or it may tear the carpet or scratch the flooring. Once you have the refrigerator out you will be able to see the pump. On the forward side of the pump you will see where the cold water supply from the tank connects to the pump. Take the supply line off and that is where the filter is located. (to get the supply line off push the line in and there is an inner ring that also pushes and then pull the supply line out once again it will become obvious when you get in there) All you have to do is remove the filter assembly from the pump and you find the screen in there. Clean the filter and put the assembly back together.

Now you just take a little break.

So that I never had to go through this process again I installed and inline filter on the cold water supply from the tank that I could easily access by removing the trash container or the cabinet under the sink. This has proven to be a life saver. I have attached a picture below any good marine supply store will have one. When you install it make sure the screen is up. You simply unscrew the clear plastic top and remove the screen clean it and put it back together. I make sure to have a small towel under the assembly to collect the water that come from the assembly.

I almost forgot don't forget to install a shutoff valve prior to the inline filter otherwise the water from the tank will run out making a mess. Picture below.

Make sure to check for leaks before you put the refrigerator back into place.

I am exhausted. Good Luck

Joe, great stuff...thanks for posting. You also brought a 2012 thread back to life!

Since it's back to life.....On my 05 37PC I used a hole saw and cut about a 5" hole in the panel between under the sink and the refrigerator. Now I can just stick my hand through the hole and
easily access the pump to clean the filter.
