Ft. Lauderdale to Bimini in June 2012

I am wanting to go to Bimini the second week of June 2012. I would like to leave on a Sunday and return on a Friday. The Bahamas boating fling runs Thursday to Sunday which is tough for me to attend. Is anyone else wanting to make the same trip?

I have booked my trip to Bimini from Ft Lauderdale for June 9th departure from Harbour Towne marina. if any others boaters are interested let me know. Thanks

Man that would be an awesome trip with a few boats. When I was young (early 90s lol) my family and I flew Chalks Airlines which were the seaplanes that flew out there. The island at that time was still devastated from Hurricane Andrew and it was a pretty scary place to go thru customs and see what I saw being a little guy. I mean legit watching two natives chase a chicken down the road as we were walking to our hotel, which the travel agent led us wrong at. We were to the point of finding the next flight out but while walking around we stumbled across big concrete walls and we walked thru and found an oasis (Bimini Big Game Club). We packed our $%#@ and stayed there. It was cool seeing where Formula did all their photoshoots.

I looked on google maps recently and it looks like Bimini has seriously changed in a good way. I would consider going back again, not this year because i will be tapped out between the wedding, towing the boat to Captiva for wedding and all of what I did to the boat these past few months.

Make sure you do a nice write up with pics maybe I will tow down from Jersey and join you if you decide to make the run in the future.

Bernster, pm me if you dicedie you want to make the trip. I have been waiting for two years to make the crossing. I trailered to ft. Lauderdale last year to make the crossing and ended up fighting six foot seas and only made it siz miles out before returning. I ended up trailering 2400 miles to use my boat for about 4hours. This year I am allowing time to wait for the right conditions to cross.

We did make the trip as scheduled. Going over was not bad with 1 to 2 footers. About 10 miles off the coast of Bimini, we hit a rope that was floating and it stalled both motors. Fornuatly, the last motor to be running sucked all the rope off the first one as we had to go in on 1 motor. This took an extra 1 hour as we only were able to cruis at about 7 knots. One of the photos shows a police office from Miami cutting the rope off which took and hour with a fillet knife. The return trip was a bit rougher as the wind was from the north at about 10 to 12 knots which made for 2 to 4 footers. We returned to South Beach Miami so we would not have to run into the waves. We then had lunch at Montys and headed up north to Fort Lauderdale we we pulled out. My family enjoyed the trip so much that we can't wait to ga back next year.

I am hoping to make the trip this June again. I will post as the time approaches. I am thinking middle of June.
Thanks

After reviewing this thread again about the BIMINI trip. Can you explain in detail the customs process? Also where you depart from in Florida and where you actually check in at? It would be greatly appreciated.
